Great Score at a Fair Price!

This score is the complete Broadway version of the show with all the incidental music etc. My Fair Lady is a classic Lerner and Lowe and students of musical theater need to have this. It contains pieces like The Ascot Gavotte...not found elsewhere. The Overture will take some careful fingerwork, but worth it. I'm a theater organist and find it easily adaptable.

This score is exactly what is provided when a theater company rents the performance rights to My Fair Lady. Studying from this score has been a great advantage while preparing to conduct performances of this show.

The score arrived in excellent condition and well within the advertised time frame

The score arrived in excellent condition and well within the advertised time frame.
It is clearly printed and well cued for the various instruments. However, the instrumental cues,as marked, refer to the original instrumentation of the 1956 broadway performance and are not of much value to amateur performances using the supplied smaller Orchestra versions most groups will need to use.
If you are luckey enough to be able to use the larger orchestration then it is a great help to the MD who does not have the benefit of a full Orchestra score (partiture).

An Excellent Approach to Helping Folks Overcome Presentation Phobia

I have assessed at least 5 other textbooks about Basic Presentation Skills and this is, by far, the most positive, comprehensive and clearly written I have ever seen for EFL or ESL learners. Of course, it is not perfect. But it takes the right approach by starting with the easiest and least intimidating skills first, then incrementally building up to more advanced concepts. The DVD includes several very well produced, enlightening, and entertaining demo presentations that would engage ANY class of learners--not just second language learners--and the overall tone of the package (book and DVD together) is so up-beat and positive that it will help just about anyone to overcome one of life's greatest fears, the fear of public speaking. Highly Recommended!

Of little use

The best feature of this text is a DVD containing example presentations. Unfortunately, the impetus for the design of the presentations seems to have been more on being amusing and "professional" than on utility for either instructors or learners: none bears repeated viewing, and intrusive voiceovers militate further against intensive viewing.
The textbook portion of the course is liberally larded with illustrations that do not contribute to learning, and the pacing of the text uneven in the extreme: instructors will find classes ripping through 10 or 15 pages per hour in one section and taking 2-3 hours per page in others. The text does not lend itself to language instruction _per se_; the presentation skills ostensibly taught are not likely to be useful for future presenters aside from (as would any other textbook or practice) providing opportunities for practice.
A further caution about a "new" edition currently being marketed by the publisher, this "new" edition including access to an "E-book": the "new" edition consists of a new cover only: not a word of the text has changed, and the "E-book" is simply a slow, poorly designed Javascript rendering of the textbook.
Overall, not recommended at all.

WHAT IS IS

This book was suggested byNatalie Goldberg for her upcoming class titled: "ROLLING WITH UNCERTAINTY: Koans and Writing." Steve Heine will also be instructing. I'm a tangential Zen novice. Natalie stated that writing practice is a back door to Zen. I am interesting in learning about other perceptions of reality.

I am unqualified to evaluate the accuracy of the research of Zen ancient texts that the book alludes to. The book is written in an academic style. This means there are lots of suppositions, cliches, and contradictions if one care looks for them, which I did (do).

While not the major intent of the book, there are similarities and contrasts with other world religions ingrained. These are not explicitly stated but are inescapable if one is aware of the larger topic This is to be expected; for after all Zen Buddism is a religion. Koans are part of the Zen holy text.

This book fits in a very small publishing niche whose audience is Zen seekers. It'll never make the New YorkTimes Best Sellers List. It's a good reference for Koans, if not the best there is. After all, Natalie recommended it!

Excellent book, more of an atlas than a text

I'm surprised there aren't more OCT texts out there. I've had this book for quite some time now. It is a great resource with good pictures of fundus images of many disease states and correlates them with FA and OCT images. Often there are pre and post treatment pictures.

It may be outdated soon with some of the newer OCT technologies coming out, but I think the basics and OCT findings presented will not be significantly different.

The focus of the book is definitely on retinal disease although there is a chapter on OCT in management of glaucoma. For retinal disease, it is pretty comprehensive, usually showing multiple examples of any given disease.

I would highly recommend this book for those with an interest in OCT.
My ownly gripe with the book is that I felt that the authors should have developed a methodology for the systematic evaluation of an OCT...similar to how medical students are taught to read a chest x-ray. Oh well.

Good reference for OCT

This book is a more than adequate reference to OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography) and its' applications to ocular diseases. The principles of OCT is a very good reference for understanding how the technology works. The OCT findings correlated with the fundus pictures and angiogram provide an excellent view of the pathology of the cases reviewed. A good reference to have for glaucoma and retinal specialist.

Stephen Karam is the author of Sons of the Prophet, a finalist for the 2012 Pulitzer Prize and the recipient of the 2012 Drama Critics Circle, Outer Critics Circle, Lucille Lortel and Hull-Warriner Awards for Best Play. Other plays include Speech & Debate, the inaugural production of Roundabout Underground; columbinus (New York Theatre Workshop); and the libretto for Dark Sisters, an original chamber opera with composer Nico Muhly. Stephen is a MacDowell Colony fellow and the recipient of the inaugural Sam Norkin Off-Broadway Drama Desk Award. He teaches graduate playwriting at The New School. “Don’tcha think it should cost less to be alive?”

“Don’tcha think it should cost less to be alive?” That line, which concludes the father's speech to his daughter's new live-in boyfriend, captures much of what this play is about. Karam gets at the financial stress that burdens the middle-class in this period of stagnation. Jobs and pensions lost, dead-end jobs stoically endured for decades, caring for an aging parent while still holding down full-time jobs, etc. Karam shows the interconnections between these economic woes and the social and psychological burdens the family members also face: allegiance to one's childhood faith, struggles with weight, chronic health issues, the fear of NYC after 9-11, recovering from depression, use of anti-depressants, class differences, the importance of marriage, etc. Karam wonderfully avoids hitting one over the head with any of these issues; instead, they are subtly (and often humorously) invoked during conversations. What Karam doesn't make a conflict is also significant; we see here a family that has no problem with their daughter's/sister's homosexuality. Instead, each is incredibly supportive (mom even brings up scissoring during dinner). Nor is the young woman's depression due to her sexuality; instead, Karam suggests it has to due with the intersection of her ulcerative colitis and her worries about finding a new partner for life.

Karam tackles these issues through comedy-drama instead of tragedy. This family supports one another, but they can also make some great jokes about each other. I haven't seen this on-stage yet, but Karam gives a good amount of text that is supposed to be conveyed non-verbally, and comedic actors and directors could do a lot with this. This comedy in the face of financial, social, and psychological burdens, along with the family members' support and lack of hate for one another, characterize this play. Other key characteristics include the set design (kind of a cross-section of the two floors and four rooms of this apartment, where action often occurs simultaneously) and the use of what Freud calls the uncanny (which Karam quotes as an epigram to the book). The use of the uncanny (think "hauntings") comes to a head at the very end of the play and is surprisingly nicely in tension with the incredible realism of the set (including the noises old apartments make) and the dialogue (characters often leave lines unfinished and interrupt each other).

I would highly recommend reading this play, and I can't wait to see it performed.

THE HUMANS is everything the critics said it was. It is heartwarming, sad, funny, and scary all mixed together. I read this play and can see my own family having these discussions at Thanksgiving or Christmas. What an outstanding play.
