In Kolmar, tall young horse-farmer Lanen Kaelar dreams of meeting the True Dragons of the remote West. Soon, a Harvest ship, braving the terrible winter storms, will set off for Dragon Isle to seek valuable lansip leaves and fruit (they heal ills and prolong life). Though the chances of a successful return are small, Lanen will be aboard, along with Marik (he may be Lanen's father; he certainly has sold his firstborn child to demons). On Dragon Isle, Lanen meets Akor, the magnificent silver King of the Dragons, and finds that, somehow, she can speak with him telepathically; they fall utterly in love. But their love is forbidden by the Council of Dragons because of ancient strife between dragon and human. Meanwhile, Marik and his sorcerous sidekick, Caderan, are plotting all manner of wickedness. Eventually, Marik will grab Lanen (she is his daughter) and attempt to feed her to a demon; Akor, grievously wounded in defending her, is magically transformed into a man, and Marik has his brains scrambled by Akor's vengeful subjects. The Ultimate Romantic Fantasy!

Song in the Silence is one of the best fantasy books I have ever read, and I have read many! The book is primarily about the relationship between a woman, Lanen Kaelar, and a dragon. The setting is in another world that has an almost medieval feel to it. The author's writing style is superb and the book begs for a sequel. It is hard not to fall in love with the characters. Lanen is very strong willed and goes up against many dangers and terrible odds just to fulfil her dream of meeting real dragons. The book is a must of all who enjoyed Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern series. A pure joy to read. Delightful and entertaining. Romance and fantasy are skillfully interwoven in this brilliant book.

Fabulous story - a must for all dragon lovers

Thank you Elizabeth Kerner! I am so tired of dragons being portrayed as angry, blood-thirsty killer beasts with no concious thought. Dragons are noble, wise, ancient, and fantastic creatures and here Elizabeth Kerner has captured these aspects with a new resounding flare.
When I began this book, the story was understandable and well thought through. The scenes and descriptions were vivid and thouroughly enjoyable. However, first person POV can be difficult for many people,(mainly because few authors write in it) and this book has many first persons - but I recomend patience and persistance. For thos who don't have patience, try to find some (you will be well rewarded), soon after the POV shifting began and I had accepted it, it no longer became a struggle to read, but actually brought a new depth to the story.
I recommend this tale (and *The Lesser Kindred*) to all women. Lanen is a Phenomonal and strong woman, to whom all women can relate and see something of themselves (past, present, and future) in her.

Different Style

First, I *love* dragons, and I'm a fiend for romance, so it's no surprise that I really enjoyed this book! Lanen was a great character to "live" with, and Akor (the dragon) was amazing. However. The reviews are true -- the book is a bit predictable with the "evil" that they face. I also found the long, drawn out explanatory passages a bit tedious, and the narrative style was difficult to adjust to, as well. I don't tend toward first person narrative, and this book is written in MULTIPLE first person narrative. The POV character switches in the middle of the scene, and often, in the middle of dialog. It's not confusing, it's just not "typical." Sometimes I felt like I wanted the author to pick one POV character and stick with it!!! I didn't need the internal thoughts of EVERYONE -- the good guys, the bad guys, minor characters, EVERYONE has their own POV.
Of course, if you can get past that, the book is amazing. It takes a while to get to the romance, and in that you have your typical fantasy plot, but all in all its a good mix of the two. The romance is very enjoyable, however.
Ms. kerner did a good job, and I look forward to reading the future books in this series!

Great Book, and Much Cheaper Than The "College Version"

I am in culinary school and this is the required text for our classes. After hours of researching online, and even taking the time to call the publisher, I finally decided to take a risk by buying this "Trade" version rather than the "College Version," offered here on Amazon and in our school's bookstore. Rest assured! This book is EXACTLY the same as the "College Version," but it doesn't include the CulinarE Companion CD (which our school does not utilize anyway)! I even had the instructors at school ask the publisher about the differences, and they admitted that there are none! All of the recipes and page numbers match up identically. Save yourself the $36+ dollars and buy this version instead of getting ripped off by a marketing scam to get more money out of students by calling a book the "College Version" - I'm glad I did!

We are just getting into the book, so I can't offer too much of an opinion, but from what I've seen so far, I'm impressed! I just wanted to add my review so that hopefully another student like myself can save some money. I hope it helps!

A superb learning tool and reference

I grew up with great home cooking and always took it for granted. When I went off to University I quickly realized that Macaroni & cheese would not do me the way it seemed to for many of my colleagues, so I set out to bolster my impoverished culinary skills. After several years of over-the-phone consultations with mom, experimentation, and generally bland meals, I still lacked the basic knowledge and skill to tackle any but the most detailed recipes, and I had more questions than answers. Then I stumbled upon Wayne Gisslen's "Professional Cooking 4th Ed." The standard text for many culinary schools, Gisslen's well organized text book is a must for the aspiring amateur home chef. Expertly laid out and documented with beautiful photography, it will take your cooking to the next level. Gisslen has structured his book to first provide you with an in-depth knowledge of ingredients and basic cooking techniques, these are then applied in the many exquisite recipes that follow. For example, chapter 10: Understanding Meats has subsections on: Composition, Structure and Basic Quality Factors; Understanding the Basic Cuts; Cooking and Handling Meats. The following chapter then applies these principles in recipes grouped according to cooking method. The recipes range from fairly simple to more involved and all the ones I've tried have been outstanding. ONE WORD OF CAUTION! This is NOT a step-by-step cookbook that the beginner cook can just pick up to whip up a meal on the spur or the moment. All the recipes require knowledge of the basic cooking techniques which are covered in the previous chapter(s). This is an amazingly in-depth text book and requires time spent in careful study. Also, since the recipes are scaled for the professional kitchen one must scale them down for personal use (covered in chapter 5). However, if you are willing to put the time in, you will be amazed at how much you learn. As your basic skill level increases so will your confidence for tackling previously intimidating recipes. This book will be a treasured resource on my shelf for years to come. A must for the professional as well as the amateur enthusiast and well worth the money.

Best in the field

With each edition I can hardly imagine how the next one could possibly be any better and this one is no different. This book is the standard issue book at many cooking schools. That is actually how I came upon my first copy, from a friend who had finished Chef school and purchased a newer edition.
The illustrations are beautiful and very helpful, the directions clear and concise. Make no mistake, this is a complete cooking school course with everything except the tuition and practice. Starting at the beginning is a good idea because it is laid out like a course. So, it teaches a technique and then from that point forward in the book it refers to the technique. However, with a thorough index it is not a problem to find out where the technique was discussed.
There is no better book to learn professional cooking or just learn the techniques to astound your friends. Thorough and well documented, when it comes to learning professional cooking techniques, this is the book to have.

W. F. Ryan is academic librarian of the Warburg Institute at the University of London, School of Advanced Studies. Great resource for Slavic Magic

This is THE book of Slavic magic.

I just used this book as the main source for my thesis on magic and folk custom in Russia. Out of all the books I researched this one has, by far, the most information in a very well laid out format. Most of Ryan's sources are primary texts and are well recorded if you ever want to do further study.

It's also a great source for anyone who just wants to learn more about the magical side of Slavic culture. And I found it very easy to read.

Magic in Russia

Reading Russian non-fiction hasn't been this entertaining. This book by W.F. Ryan is ultimate choice for learning about Slavic magic. It has almost everything: origin of magic, Western European influence (both in and out), photos of Slavic ornaments, descriptions of divinatory ways of life, and cited sources. The only flaws I can find are repeated words throughout. Examples: ". . . sleeping like like a lion . . ." or ". . . there would would have been . . ." though many are not really distractive. All in all, this is the ultimate non-fiction book about Slavic (mainly Russian) magic. A-

Critical stance before magic beliefs

Would you eat potatoes if you believed that they grow out of the anus and genitals of a dead oriental magician? Do you want to know what anyone is thinking? There is a way by using peas and snakes. "If a madman is touched by a diamond he will be cured of his malady" (good to cure your mad relatives, although perhaps out or reach for much of the common folk). Do you laugh at it? Russian have believed that way for centuries, and similar beliefs have been shared (do not use the past tense!) by the other European -and American- people too.

All this and more is compiled in a very orderly way by the author, in a masterful work that can be savoured by the professional historian and educated layperson alike. Besides, the book is not a difficult reading (content: 5 starts; pleasure of reading: 4 to 3).

"Resumes For Dummies" by Laura DeCarlo is a solid guide for developing a resume.

Every so often, a new resume book comes around. Too often, they are filled with templates you should avoid. "Resumes For Dummies" offers so much more. There are strategies, methods and a full range of templates.

Why a new book? Technology has changed, for one thing. Related to that is that jobs themselves have changed. Many of us work for ourselves in a consulting role, for example. Do we list ourselves as CEO or as a manager if we are the only employee?

There are three big questions when developing a resume. One is what should be said and how it should be worded. Two is how should that content be structured (ex: should education be listed at the top of bottom). And third is the format.

The most important thing ultimately is the content. Everything else is how we shape it. DeCarlo gets that, and devotes most of the book detailing this. She helps you screen out the resume foolishness so many of us have. Which words will help your resume be found on LinkedIn and elsewhere? How should you approach a resume if you've been in a job for a long time?

You get the idea. If you are struggling to put together an intelligent resume, buy this book.

The Best DIY Resume Resource Out There

Laura sent me a copy of her recently revised edition of Resumes For Dummies. As a LinkedIn guy, I have a hard time even reading a resume, let alone writing one!

But her revised version of this classic career book really opened the doors for me. With serious attention devoted to the modern job search, like getting past Applicant Tracking Systems and the 10-second scan (on screen not on paper any more!) she brings new light to this essential career tool.

The best part of the book are the WOW words and resume samples. I learn best from examples and rather than drowning in theory, this book actually gives me words I can use to get unstuck in my writing, and sample resumes to get me started.

If you're not about to hire a professional resume writer, this would be the book I'd recommend you study for your DIY project.

Outstanding up to date resume and job search advice

Resumes for Dummies is an excellent up to date book about resume writing and other aspects of the 21st century job search. Your public library is full of books on resumes that are out of date. Things have changed, between the advent of social media and the shift away from the one-size-fits-all chronological tombstone resume. This book is fully up to date, and written by a true resume expert.

Areas covered include how to handle social media and job boards, keeping yourself from being passed up because too many sources forward your info to a job opening, best formats for different situations, setting up your plain text resume, choosing the best words to represent your experience, targeting your resume for different jobs, and so on. There are sample layouts and, most welcome, sample resumes for different situations from job changing through being fired, through a series of progressive jobs with a single employer, and of course, the new worker with essentially no experience. An area where the book really shines is in finding ways to present summary information to make you stand out.

Little or no wasting time on the obvious, lots of fresh valuable information and advice, and SAMPLES. An excellent resource.
