Aubrey Beardsley, in full Aubrey Vincent Beardsley (born August 21, 1872, Brighton, Sussex, England—died March 16, 1898, Menton, France), the leading English illustrator of the 1890s and, after Oscar Wilde, the outstanding figure in the Aestheticism movement. Drawing was a strong interest from early childhood, and Beardsley practiced it while earning his living as a clerk. Beardsley’s meeting with the English artist Sir Edward Burne-Jones in 1891 prompted him to attend evening classes at the Westminster School of Art for a few months, his only professional instruction. “Morte Darthur, Le” [Credit: Rosenwald Collection, Library of Congress, Washington, D.C.]“Morte Darthur, Le” [Credit: Photos.com/Jupiterimages]In 1893 Beardsley was commissioned to illustrate a new edition of Sir Thomas Malory’s Le Morte Darthur, and in 1894 he was appointed art editor and illustrator of a new quarterly, The Yellow Book. His illustrations (1894) for Oscar Wilde’s play Salomé won him widespread notoriety. He was greatly influenced by the elegant, curvilinear style of Art Nouveau and the bold sense of design found in Japanese woodcuts. But what startled his critics and the public alike was the obvious sensuality of the women in his drawings, which usually contained an element of morbid eroticism. This tendency became pronounced in his openly licentious illustrations (1896) for Aristophanes’ Lysistrata. “Dame aux Camélias, La” [Credit: ]Although Beardsley was not homosexual, he was dismissed from The Yellow Book as part of the general revulsion against Aestheticism that followed the scandal surrounding Wilde in 1895. He then became principal illustrator of another new magazine, The Savoy, and he illustrated numerous books, including in 1896 Alexander Pope’s Rape of the Lock. During this period he also wrote some poems and a prose parody, Under the Hill (1903; the original, unexpurgated version, The Story of Venus and Tannhauser, appeared in 1907). Delicate in health from the age of six, when he first contracted tuberculosis, Beardsley again fell victim to the disease when he was 17. From 1896 he was an invalid. In 1897, after being received into the Roman Catholic church, he went to live in France, where he died at age 25. His work has enjoyed periodic revivals, most notably during the 1960s.

Robert Baldwin "Robbie" Ross (May 25, 1869 – October 5, 1918) was a Canadian journalist and art critic. He is best known as the literary executor of Oscar Wilde, a dear friend and mentor. He was also responsible for mentoring several great literary figures, such as Siegfried Sassoon. His open homosexuality in a time when homosexual acts were illegal brought him many hardships.

only aubrey beardsley book you'll ever need! JUST GET IT OMG

i'm pretty sure this is his complete works. i LOVE IT. best thing i got this christmas. it includes all kinds of stuff, like early sketches, book covers, etc. TONS of plates, large sizes, most of them take up a whole page. nothing is worse than buying a huge art book and all the pictures are tiny- NOT THE CASE HERE. full page illustrations and tons and tons of them. there are even blown up images of the tiny grotesques from the corners of pages, and images of his cool fonts and stuff. you will not be disappointed!!!!

The Book AUBREY BEARDSLEY is a wonderful account of this 19th century artist and illustrator. The plates of his prints are fantastic. I was influenced by him as a young artist and i am grateful to get this book again ( i had it years ago but it was stolen) and keep it in my collection.

About the Author

James M. Henslin, who was born in Minnesota, graduated from high school and junior college in California and from college in Indiana. Awarded scholarships, he earned his Master’s and doctorate degrees in sociology at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. After this, he was awarded a postdoctoral fellowship from the National Institute of Mental Health, and spent a year studying how people adjust to the suicide of a family member. His primary interests in sociology are the sociology of everyday life, deviance, and international relations. Among his numerous books is Down-to-Earth Sociology : Introductory Readings (Free Press), now in its twelfth edition. This book of readings reflects some of these sociological interests. He has also published widely in sociology journals, including Social Problems and American Journal of Sociology,

While a graduate student, Jim Henslin taught at the University of Missouri at St. Louis. After completing his doctorate, he joined the faculty at Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville, where he is Professor Emeritus of Sociology. He says, “I’ve always found the introductory course enjoyable to teach. I love to see students’ faces light up when they first glimpse the sociological perspective and begin to see how society has become an essential part of how they view the world.”

Henslin enjoys reading and fishing. His two favorite activities are writing and traveling. He especially enjoys visiting and living in other cultures, for this brings him face to face with behaviors and ways of thinking that he cannot take for granted, experiences that “make sociological principles come alive.”

Correct book and came in in great conditions but it smelled horrible!!! The second you open the package it smells like rats been near it. I had summer school for about 6 weeks and this thing smelled just as bad as the first day I got it . I never took it out in class unless I really needed to

    Jeff Mitchell's dusty boots had already covered new ground when he wrote "Hiking the Endless Mountains" - the first hiking book to explore the beautiful forests and creeks of Pennsylvania's Endless Mountains. Written by the Pennsylvania native, "Backpacking Pennsylvania, 37 Great Hikes" has now established Mitchell's books as the most current and definitive guide series for hiking and backpacking throughout Pennsylvania. In "Backpacking Pennsylvania", Jeff travels beyond the Allegheny Plateaus to provide concise and well-written trail descriptions. Just enough information is provided for each trail system and Mitchell leaves it to the reader to put his book down and to just start hiking!

    Jeff Mitchell's Preface in "Backpacking Pennsylvania" is a righteous testamony to those special places which are rapidly disappearing in the 21st Century.     About the Author
    Before entering academia, Professor McDowell spent over two decades in commercial television, including station management positions in promotion, programming, and creative services. After earning his doctorate in from the University of Florida, and teaching for several years at Southern Illinois University, he joined the faculty of the School of Communication at the University of Miami in 2001. In addition to teaching various media management courses, Professor McDowell has published media branding studies in several academic publications including The Journal of Media Economics, and the International Journal on Media Management. A nationally known consultant, he also has authored two books published by the National Association of Broadcasters and Focal Press Branding TV: Principles and Practices (with Alan Batten) and Troubleshooting Audience Research.
    Alan Batten graduated from the University of Maryland (College Park) and undertook postgraduate work at Boston University's School of Public Communications. He has been active in the broadcast industry since 1971 where he had the opportunity to lead the marketing efforts of several stations affiliated with NBC, ABC, CBS, FOX and PBS. Along the way, he served as President of the Broadcast Promotion and Marketing Executives (now known as PROMAX). He has received countless industry awards and presented numerous international lectures on various aspects of broadcast marketing. In 1991, he founded ABCommunications to provide consulting services for marketing challenges. ABCommunications counts as clients such industry giants as Sinclair Broadcast Group, Universal Pictures, ACT III Broadcasting, and Raycom Sports. A writer at heart, he has written several motion picture and television scripts and enjoys producing radio commercials.

    About the Author

    Amy Macy is Professor in the Department of Recording Industry at Middle Tennessee State University. She is the recipient of the Distinguished Educator in Distance Learning and the Outstanding Achievement in Instructional Technology. She has worked for labels including MTM, MCA, Sparrow Records, and the RCA Label Group where she marketed Martina McBride, Kenny Chesney, and Alabama. Amy was responsible for national retail sales at Walmart, Kmart, Target, and Best Buy, while coordinating marketing strategies nationally with RCA’s distributor Bertelsmann Music Group. She has been an artist in residence at the Country Music Hall of Fame.

    Clyde Philip Rolston is Professor of Music Business in the Mike Curb College of Entertainment and Music Business at Belmont University. Prior to joining the faculty at Belmont University he was a Vice President of Marketing at Centaur Records, Inc. While with Centaur Records, Dr. Rolston engineered and produced many projects, including recordings by the Philadelphia Trio and the London Symphony Orchestra. He is an active member of the Music and Entertainment Industry Educators Association. Dr. Rolston received a Ph.D. in Marketing from Temple University and has taught marketing to music business students for twenty years.

    Paul Allen is Associate Professor in the Department of Recording Industry at Middle Tennessee State University and co-author of Record Label Marketing, also published by Focal Press. He is also a frequent lecturer at other universities on artist management and other music business subjects. His career work has included radio, TV, political management, and the music business.

    The late Tom Hutchison was a professor of marketing in the Department of Recording Industry at MTSU, but was on leave to serve as the director of the School of Business and Management at Husson University. He worked with a wide range of popular artists including Faith Hill, The Dixie Chicks, The Roots, and Beck. Tom also conducted market research projects for Sony, MCA/Universal, DreamWorks, and Warner Music Group.

    The Lady of Shallot, the Genevieve Cotes Edition: A Pictorial Travesty!

    When I opened my copy of the Visions in Poetry edition of Tennyson's "The Lady of Shalott," I was first astounded and then bewildered by Genevieve Cotes' illustrations of the Tennyson poem. The purpose of pictorial content is to support the text. That's what I expected and thus my criticism of this edition. The poem is given in its entirety, its flights of fancy as beautiful and poignant as ever: the poem itself is impeachable. The illustrations, however, show little regard for the subject matter or chronology of the poem. With Ms. Cotes it seems the artwork is what's important here and not the text. Didn't she read the poem? Cotes' illustrations are anachronisms and this is the problem. The setting appears to be France, Camelot depicted as an early twentieth century French city. (I know the character of Lancelot is a French contribution to the Arthurian Legend, but Cotes' interpretation is ridiculous!) The first illustration presents what appears to be a Parisian couple dressed in 1920's couture. In the background one sees an auto on a bridge and a city skyline hardly medieval.

    Tennyson's poem, composed between the years of 1832-42, drew its inspiration from Sir Thomas Malory's "Le Morte Darthur," a compilation of Arthurian romances printed by William Caxton in 1485, in particular the romance "The Fair Maid of Astolat" in which a summary states: "(And, as the booke sayth, she keste such a love unto sir Launcelot that she cowde never withdraw hir loove, wherefore she dyed. And her name was Elayne le Blanke.)" Tennyson takes the story of Elaine and Lancelot and restructures it ("Lancelot and Elaine") in blank verse in his "Idylls of the King." Elaine's story further inspired "The Lady of Shalott," in which the maiden's unrequited love is a kind of curse which causes her to live a life of illusion through the images in the mirror on her wall. The curse "is on her" if she turns her back on the mirror, the life it reflects, turns to the window of her tower and looks out upon the reality of the outside world. The only way she can connect with reality and the world beyond and escape the curse is to weave the mirror's images into a tapestry.

    For textual support, then, one would expect artwork depicting medieval dress and architecture, knights with heraldic crests on their shields. Cotes' Lancelot, though astride a charger, wears a military trenchcoat vintage WWI, sports a medal-laden lapel and what appears to be "motorcycle" goggles riding above the brim of his helmet. Where's the rendering of the Golden Age of Chivalry?? In Part One, stanza three, "heavy barges" and "the shallop," (a small sailboat), are given as a modern fishing boat with one of the crew setting or pulling a net. In the next stanza we see "reapers reaping early" wearing sunglasses as protection from the morning glare. In Part iv, stanza four, Cotes has the dead Fairy Lady float past a river or canal front, drifting by the facade of a twentieth century city (hardly the Camelot I envision) and promenade replete with sidewalk cafe and lounging patrons. (Strange, too, that Cotes' "Fairy Lady" sprouts wings when she's outside her tower. Perhaps the Lady only wears them when she "goes out?") Before Cotes sat down at her easel or drawing board, perhaps she should have consulted two beautiful nineteenth century renderings of The Lady of Shalott by William Holman Hunt and John William Waterhouse. Both paintings capture faithfully the medieval times of Arthuriana; it is apparent both artists read the text.

    If it weren't for its helpful back material, I would have given this edition only a one star rating. I recently shared Tennyson's beautiful story with my mother and purchased this illustrated version for her birthday present. What a disappointment! In the case of this illustrated version of "The Lady of Shalott," the "search inside this book" feature would have been most helpful.

    I love the poem, always have.The Waterhouse painting on the cover is lovely. In my mind eveything about this poem is lovely. I disagree with much of the commentary regarding the poem's "meaning." Some things just stand on their own and require no analysis.

    Everything I expected

    This booklet was exactly as advertised. The introduction by Jocelyn Almond is a fairly lengthy analysis if the work. Each stanza of the poem occupies its own page. The cover illustration is "The Lady of Shalott" (1888) by John William Waterhouse. Other illustrations include a photograph of Tennyson and details of works by William Holman Hunt, Edmund J. Sullivan, W. E. F. Britten, and Dante Gabriel Rossetti. This would make a fine gift for any poetry lover, and especially for fans of Lord Tennyson.
