An Elegant Compendium of Modern Homes, Few of Which Really Have Small Footprints

I've read through this book twice now, and ideas just keep jumping off the page at me. The book features one amazing home after another, with each one getting several pictures, often some architectural sketches, and then ample descriptive text. This is what I call "an architect home" book, as it features one amazing architect-built house after another. These are not homes I see around my neighborhood or anywhere I go, for that matter. These are exceptional homes for people and organizations with dough.

I have one problem with this book: It's described via its title as being focused on sustainability and featuring "houses with small footprints." And yet, many of the homes in this book have 4,000+ square feet. The smaller ones have 2,000 square feet. Small footprints? In many cases, the actual footprint of the living space far exceeds the footprint of the main structure because of the extensive deck systems and highly architectural grounds. And while it's true that all of the homes in this book are "green" in some way -- they have things like rain-recovery systems, extra insulation, underground locations, and repurposed materials -- it's far from a book about truly environmentally friendly homes. This is not an Earth Ship book; it's a fine home book. So why pretend it's all about sustainability?

These are homes built on a massive scale. I show this in some of my images: these are houses with massive interior areas to heat and cool; these are houses with massive footprints (in many cases); these are houses made from all kinds of modern materials sourced from all over the world; and these are houses for the very rich. There is no doubt about it that this is a high-end home book. If we all lived in homes like this, if that were even possible, I fear that our planet would be in even worse trouble than it already is simple because of how many expensive materials it clearly takes to build these massive, high-end homes. Plus, there is nothing sustainable about one family taking up this much space and these many resources.

So why 4 stars if I'm so crabby about this book? Well, it's still a gorgeous book full of amazing ideas about modern home building. Really, my only beef with this book is that it represents itself as being "green" when it's only a very, very light shade of that color.

Humans are just beginning to learn to be peaceful; how will they react to a request by aliens to fight other aliens? In order to credit this scenario, readers must accept a very skewed future universe: of all the planets with intelligent life, only Earth is tectonically active, with violent weather and more than one land mass; only humans have more than one language, fight within their own species and are, for some reason, immune to the Amplitur telepathy. The writing is crisp, but cannot make up for the burden these contrivances place on the story.

The Weave, a not-always harmonious coalition of races, has taken up arms in an attempt to pursue its own destinies. Because of the basic aggressive nature of Earthlings, the Weave recruit individuals to use as warriors in their battle against the Amplitur. As in Nor Crystal Tears (1985) and Midworld (1987, both Ballantine), Foster has created a believable universe and peopled it with exotic races and memorable characters. A readable, well-crafted science-fiction adventure.

Hooray for Humans!

I picked this book up off of a desk somewhere during a former job. It was late, I was bored and the cover looked interesting. The book was a bit slow to start, but interesting once the pace increased. I found myself disappointed when I reached the last page because the job's library didn't have books two or three.

What I liked:

The characters were engaging:

The Weave aliens behaved in an unexpected...but entirely understandable way to their new "Allies" the Humans. The "Bad Guys" in many ways mimic many of the loathesome qualities of many fictitious, and real life, antagonisitic forces all the while giving the overall impression of being beneficent.

The struggle was believable and understandable:

The "Bad Guys" seek to assimilate and redirect every species they encounter to the "Purpose". This is a common theme for a reason; humans are, by and large, fiercely individualistic. The Borg, the "Body Snatchers", Vampires, Zombies all have the underlying, if not primary, purpose of "Making you one of Them".

Humans were not portrayed as weak or inferior:

Though not superior in any given area, other than warfare and ferocity, humans were considered better than all of the allied and enemy races in that humans were exceptional, even the aged humans, in all of the desired areas (strength, reaction speed, endurance, eye sight, hearing etc). It was refreshing to not read about "Puny Humans".

What I did not like:

The Main Character:

Though this may seem like a fatal flaw, it really isn't. What I didn't like about the Main character were his seemingly endless crys that humanity wants peace...even when the evidence of our blood thirstiness is staring him in the face. Now, I am all for peace, don't get me wrong, but I accept a few basic things about my brothers and sisters; we only really do two things REALLY well, kill each other and make babies. Were I put in the position of the main character, faced with probable genocide because Humans just couldn't cope with the rest of the universe's outlook on civilized behavior, I am sure that I would cry that we COULD learn to be peaceful, too.

All in all, I really enjoyed this book, I have read it at least twice, and recommend it.

Good despite its flaws

I'll be honest. Some of the ideas in this book are silly, such as Earth being tectonically active alone among thousands of inhabited planets, like one reviewer already pointed out. Never mind how the aliens are completely ignorant of tectonics despite all of their other wonderful science.
The main reason I like the book is because it panders to biased view of humanity as princes among carbon-based lifeforms. I like the vision of humans being the strongest, fastest and most vicious species in the stars, and Foster did a good job of portraying the shock of the other races at this.
I see more and more flaws in the plot as the years go by, but I gave it four stars because it's kept me thinking about the subject for such a long time.

Best book in the trilogy

A very good book, one of my all time favorites. Although, I somewhat disagree with Fosters recurrent theme of humanity's violent tendencies (presented a bit simplistic or naive in a way) it didn't keep me from enjoying this book. It is a great start to the series, and by far the best of the trilogy.
There is also a little twist in the first contact theory. Humans carry some advantages that aren't often represented in most scifi stories. I also enjoyed the switching between POVs during the initial encounters, judgments that are made about each side.

At 6:30 a.m., the alarm sounded throughout the Casa Santa Marta—a clanging seminary bell. Lomeli opened his eyes. He was curled up on his side. He felt groggy, raw. He had no idea how long he had been asleep, only that it couldn’t have been for more than an hour or two. The sudden remembrance of all he had to do in the coming day passed over him like a wave of nausea, and for a while he lay unable to move. Normally his waking routine was to meditate for fifteen minutes then rise and say his morning prayers. But on this occasion, when at last he managed to summon the will to put his feet to the floor, he went directly into the bathroom and ran a shower as hot as he could bear. The water scourged his back and shoulders. He twisted and turned beneath it and cried out in pain. Afterwards he rubbed away the moisture on the mirror and surveyed with disgust his raw and scalded skin. My body is clay, my good fame a vapour, my end is ashes.

He felt too tense to breakfast with the others. He stayed in his room, rehearsing his homily and attempting to pray, and left it until the very last minute to go downstairs.

The lobby was a red sea of cardinals robing for the short procession to St. Peter’s. The officials of the Conclave, led by Archbishop Mandorff and Monsignor O’Malley, had been allowed back into the hostel to assist; Father Zanetti was waiting at the foot of the stairs to help Lomeli dress. They went into the same waiting room opposite the chapel in which he had met Woźniak the night before. When Zanetti asked him how he had slept, he replied, “Very soundly, thank you,” and hoped the young priest would not notice the dark circles beneath his eyes and the way his hands shook when he handed him his sermon for safe keeping. He ducked his head into the opening of the thick red chasuble that had been worn by successive Deans of the College over the past twenty years and held out his arms as Zanetti fussed around him like a tailor, straightening and adjusting it. Zanetti stood in front of him and reached up to place upon his head the tall mitre of white watered silk. The priest stepped back a pace to check it was correctly aligned, squinted, came forward again and altered it by a millimetre, then walked behind Lomeli and tugged down the ribbons at the back and smoothed them. It felt alarmingly precarious. Finally he gave him the crozier. Lomeli lifted the golden shepherd’s crook a couple of times in his left hand, testing the weight. You are not a shepherd, a familiar voice whispered in his head. You are a manager. He had a sudden urge to give it back, to tear off the vestments, to confess himself a fraud and disappear. He smiled and nodded. “It feels good,” he said. “Thank you.”

Just before 10 a.m., the cardinals began moving off from the Casa Santa Marta, walking out of the plate-glass doors in pairs, in order of seniority, checked off by O’Malley on his clipboard. Lomeli, resting on the crozier, waited with Zanetti and Mandorff beside the reception desk. They had been joined by Mandorff’s deputy, the Dean of the Master of Papal Ceremonies, a cheerful, tubby Italian monsignor named Epifano, who would be his chief assistant during the Mass. Lomeli spoke to no one, looked at no one. He was still trying vainly to clear a space in his mind for God. Eternal Trinity, I intend by Your grace to celebrate Mass to Your glory, and for the benefit of all, both living and dead, for whom Christ died, and to apply the ministerial fruit for the choosing of a new Pope . . .

At last they stepped out into the blank November morning. The double file of scarlet-robed cardinals stretched ahead of him across the cobbles towards the Arch of the Bells, where they disappeared into the basilica. Again the helicopter hovered somewhere nearby; again the faint sounds of demonstrators carried on the cold air. Lomeli tried to shut out all distractions, but it was impossible. Every twenty paces stood security men who bowed their heads as he passed and blessed them. He walked with his supporters beneath the arch, across the piazza dedicated to the early martyrs, along the portico of the basilica, through the massive bronze door and into the brilliant illumination of St. Peter’s, lit for the television cameras, where a congregation of twenty thousand was waiting. He could hear the chanting of the choir beneath the dome and the vast echoing rustle of the multitude. The procession halted. He kept his eyes fixed straight ahead, willing stillness, conscious of the immense throng standing close-packed all around him—nuns and priests and lay clergy, staring at him, whispering, smiling.

After a couple of minutes, they moved on again, up the wide central aisle of the nave. He glanced from side to side, leaning on the crozier with his left hand, motioning vaguely with his right, conferring his blessing upon the blur of faces. He glimpsed himself on a giant TV screen—an erect, elaborately costumed, expressionless figure, walking as if in a trance. Who was this puppet, this hollow man? He felt entirely disembodied, as though he were floating alongside himself.

At the end of the aisle, where the nave gave on to the cupola of the dome, they had to pause beside Bernini’s statue of St. Longinus, close to where the choir was singing, and wait while the last few pairs of cardinals filed up the steps to kiss the central altar and descended again. Only when this elaborate manoeuvre had been completed was Lomeli himself cleared to walk around to the rear of the altar. He bowed towards it. Epifano stepped forward and took away the crozier and gave it to an altar boy. Then he lifted the mitre from Lomeli’s head, folded it, and handed it to a second acolyte. Out of habit, Lomeli touched his skullcap to check it was in place.

Together he and Epifano climbed the seven wide carpeted steps to the altar. Lomeli bowed again and kissed the white cloth. He straightened and rolled back the sleeves of his chasuble as if he were about to wash his hands. He took the silver thurible of burning coals and incense from its bearer and swung it by its chain over the altar—seven times on this side, and then, walking round, a separate censing on each of the other three. The sweet-smelling smoke evoked feelings beyond memory. Out of the corner of his eye he saw dark-suited figures moving his throne into position. He gave back the thurible, bowed again and allowed himself to be conducted round to the front of the altar. An altar boy held up the missal, opened to the correct page; another extended a microphone on a pole.

Once, in his youth, Lomeli had enjoyed a modest fame for the richness of his baritone. But it had become thin with age, like a fine wine left too long. He clasped his hands, closed his eyes for a moment, took a breath, and intoned in a wavering plainsong, amplified around the basilica:

“In nomine Patris et Filii et Spiritus Sancti . . .”
And from the colossal congregation arose the murmured sung response:
“Amen.”
He raised his hands in benediction and chanted again, extending the three syllables into half a dozen:
“Pa-a-x vob-i-is.”
And they responded:
“Et cum spiritu tuo.”
He had begun.

Brilliant Book.

This is a book that I found it hard to put down. You would think that it had been written by the Pope himself. The detail as to what goes on in and around the Vatican during a Conclave [election of a new Pope] is fantastically realistic. I have never been a Cardinal myself but I feel that I know the ropes if I am ever appointed one which is a bit unlikely or is it watching the Young Pope.

Interesting insight into a closed world

Conclave takes us through the papal election process, the thoughts of a fictive cardinal and the competition for the most powerfull title in the world of religion. It may not sound like the most riveting plot for a novel. But as always with Robert Harris you get to know the antagonit well as a person and there are dramas and surprises in the story.

A Book on the Art of Looking Good Naked!

For those of us who just want to look good and build the superhero/Spartan/gladiator physique, this book is a Godsend. Most exercise books have too many exercises to choose from, which is very confusing to those of us who are beginners. This book sifts through the thousands of exercises that are out there and showcases only the ones that build muscle.

Some of the exercises build up muscle all over your body, while others build up specific muscles, what the author calls "pivot points." The author explains pivot points as muscles located in strategic spots on the body that, when developed, give you the classical V-taper. So not only does the book showcase muscle building exercises, but it also explains why you would develop certain muscle groups and how to target them for aesthetics.

Some of the other things I learned from this book:

-How to create high muscular tension throughout the entire range of motion
-How to group exercises together to hit a single body part and make it grow (this gave me awesome pumps in the gym BTW)
-What reps each muscle group responds to (this part was educational, since I've never seen this information anywhere else)

This is an awesome book for both the beginner and the advanced lifter who lifts solely for looks. There is a lot of training information in it, so the book may be a little overwhelming for the beginner. But I found that I could easily apply the exercises and training techniques in the gym.

His best book yet!

I have every one of this guy's books, and I can say that this is definitely his best one. What marks this book different from his previous books is that this volume has numerous exercise photos, so you're shown how to do these exercises. If you're interested not just in building muscle, but building a physique similar to that of a gymnast's (wide shoulders, lean muscular arms, ripped abs) then this book is a must have. The author showcases a wide variety of exercises that build muscle from a variety of angles. I learned quite a few new exercises which I had never seen before. I tried some of these exercises in the gym, and they definitely gave me an incredible pump.

The author also introduces some interesting training concepts in this book. He shows you how to pair up and group exercises together so that you can extend the tension on a muscle so that it grows. He also talks about a concept called pivot point training, and shows you a diagram of muscles to target that will give you the muscular V-taper look. The author also lays out the best rep ranges for each muscle group, as each muscle is made up of different fiber types.

A great book for the exercise enthusiast who wants that extra edge.

A must have for the body-builder at any level.

I was excited to hear about this book from the author's website so I ordered it and was not disappointed when it arrived. The contents are laid out in a straight-forward manner with easy-to-read charts and programs. Beginning with a brief, but all-important note on determining your goals - do you want to build bulk, symmetry, definition? - followed by chapters on the importance of tension in building muscle fibers, and a very informative chapter on the types of muscle-fibers found in each body-part, and the most effective weight/rep ratio for each. There are also some extremely important chapters on how to utilize your exercise regime in order to get maximum, extended tension from each exercise. These informative chapters suggest the most effective weight/speed/rep/set/ ratio that may be required for optimum muscle building.

In the main body of the book each body-part is discussed in detail - each body-part being given its own chapter. Each recommended exercise is accompanied by illustrations and a detailed written description of the correct form to use. Additionally, each chapter provides a detailed workout chart that recommends a specialization regime for each body-part.

An altogether highly informative work that is perfect for home weight-trainers like myself, and gym trainers alike. The high-tension information, the targeted workout regimes, as well as the "6 factors program" discussed at the end of the book, have all helped to change the way I work out for the better, and I feel as though I am able to get more out of each rep/set/exercise than I was before.

An excellent work and a must-have for anyone serious about building muscle.

Absolute garbage

This is just printed off sheets of paper, not a real book. Why on earth would anyone pay a hundred dollars for this? Do not buy it. The paper is the worst quality you can imagine and will tear to shreds when you try to turn the page. DO NOT BUY THIS AND DO NOT SUPPORT THIS CORRUPT SELLER.

By relocating within the world of Bengali print groups previously thought to inhabit the peripheries of literate cultures, the volume also challenges the conventional understandings of social formation in the nineteenth century.
