My favorite childrens' book
By Deborah J. Flynn
This is by far the most memorable childrens' book from my youth. It takes you back to a simpler time when children were able to discover in a safe environment. On "What a Jolly Street" you visit a neighborhood full of adventures. The difficulty for me as a young girl was only reading the story of the day and not reading ahead. So much innocent fun!A great book for grandchildren.

Another nostalgic reader weighs in
By Mark Wilsonwood
I, too, loved the book when I was a child. I tried, and failed, to find a copy to read to my daughters when they were little (they're now 19 and 22). My wife bought a copy for me this past Christmas, and I am thoroughly enjoying reading one story per night, at bedtime. Amazing how much of it is familiar, 45 years later.

I wish all of us who fondly remember this book from childhood could get together for some sort of reunion. (Preferably at Mrs. Apricot's house - it's been a lot of years, but I have a feeling she still lives in the house at the end of What-a-Jolly Street, and no doubt will have freshly baked cookies when we get there).

An Old Fashioned Childhood
By Faye Constantino
This is the story of a neighborhood, unfolding day by day for an entire year! It is like "Mayberry" in the early sixties. All of the children of What-a-Jolly Street frequent the home of an elderly woman and she is the story teller, the all seeing one, who knows even when they have mistreated their toys.
As the year progresses it is not just the children we learn from and about, but also the pets and toys, even the changing seasons teach a lesson.
This book established, in me, the good moral values so many children seem to lack today. It is part of what makes me who I am, at 43 years of age. I would like to share this book with my children and future grandchildren. Search "What a Jolly Street" for great deals, I'm finally getting my hands on one after all these years!

Economix: How Our Economy Works (and Doesn't Work), in Words and Pictures, by Michael Goodwin, David Bach, Joel Bakan

Stimulus plans: good or bad? Free markets: How free are they? Jobs: Can we afford them? Occupy Wall Street . . . worldwide!
Everybody's talking about the economy, but how can we, the people, understand what Wall Street or Washington knows--or say they know? Read Economix.
With clear, witty writing and quirky, accessible art, this important and timely graphic novel transforms "the dismal science" of economics into a fun, fact-filled story about human nature and our attempts to make the most of what we've got . . . and sometimes what our neighbors have got. Economix explains it all, from the beginning of Western economic thought, to markets free and otherwise, to economic failures, successes, limitations, and future possibilities. It's the essential, accessible guide to understanding the economy and economic practices. A must-read for every citizen and every voter.

PRAISE FOR ECONOMIX
"Economix is a lively, cheerfully opinionated romp through the historical and intellectual foundations of our current economy and our current economic problems. Goodwin has a knack for distilling complex ideas and events in ways that invite the reader to follow the big picture without losing track of what actually happened. Any reader wondering how our economy got to where it is today will find this a refreshing overview." --Timothy W. Guinnane, Philip Golden Bartlett Professor of Economic History, Yale University
"[Economix] brings a lively visual sensibility to this intensely abstruse subject matter without condescending to the reader or dumbing the ideas down." --MotherJones.com
"This witty and elegant volume takes on a number of complex issues--in this case, economics, history and finance--and makes them comprehensible for mere mortals." --Miami Herald

"It's simply phenomenal. You could read ten books on the subject and not glean as much information." -- David Bach founder of FinishRich Media; author of nine New York Times bestsellers, including Debt Free for Life and The Automatic Millionaire

"Goodwin has done the seemingly impossible--he has made economics comprehensible and funny."--Joel Bakan, author of The Corporation: The Pathological Pursuit of Profit and Power

"An amazing lesson in true-world economics! Delightfully presented, powerful, insightful, and important information! What a fun way to fathom a deep and often dark subject!" --John Perkins, author of Hoodwinked and the New York Times bestseller Confessions of an Economic Hit Man

"Smart, insightful, clear, and as close to the truth as economics can get. The bonus: Who would have guessed that economics could be fun, and--here's the joy--really accessible? Goodwin roots us in history and fills us with common sense understanding. As he puts it early on, economics seems horribly complicated mostly because we're looking at it all at once. Broken down into its component pieces, it's relatively easy to understand. And a good understanding of economics is critical to maneuvering in the world today. If I were compiling a list of the 100 most important books you can read in a lifetime, this would be on it." --Stephen Petranek, editor-in-chief, Weider History magazines, former editor-in-chief of Discover magazine

"Through a potent mix of comics and punchy, concise, accessible prose, Goodwin takes us on a provocative, exhaustively researched, and exceedingly engaging trip through our history and present day, creating an alternately hilarious and scary picture of where we are today as an economy-- and what it all means. More than that, Goodwin makes the arcane, understandable. If your mind either spins or slumbers at the thought of economics, read Goodwin's Economix and all will become clear. --Nomi Prins, author of It Takes a Pillage: An Epic Tale of Power, Deceit, and Untold Trillions

Review
"I just cannot stress enough how amazing this book is!" --James Floyd Kelly, Wired.com

"Dan E. Burr's appealing illustrations add punch, humor, and clarity to Goodwin's already-excellent storytelling skills. . . . Light switches flicked on in my mind every few pages or so, and after reading Economix I felt like I understood many fundamental aspects about the way the world works. . . . Economix is a book I'm going to buy and give to people."--Mark Frauenfelder, BoingBoing

"Michael Goodwin hasn't just written a great graphic novel -- he's written one that should be required for every school, newsroom and library in the United States." --Andrew Smith, Scripps-Howard News Service

"Economix eliminates stupidity in the face of economics-speak. . . . You'll come away from Economix with a slew of newly understood concepts, from mixed economy to stagflation, but the most important thing you'll come away with is a newfound confidence in your ability to understand how the economic world works for and often against us. --Bob Duggan, BigThink.com

"Goodwin brilliantly contextualizes economic theories with historical narrative, while Burr's simple but elegant illustration employs classical techniques like caricaturing politicians and symbolizing big businesses (as a gleeful factory) to help the reader visualize difficult concepts. If the book has a prime message, it's that the economy is quite understandable and when things go wrong, the effort and thinking of a whole society must be applied to bring everything back into line." --Publisher's Weekly (starred review)

Disappointed by the snarkiness, but otherwise, it's very good.
By Edvard Odessia
UPDATE 5/20/14: The Law of Supply and Demand wins out. I can't find a better primer on economics for students (or anyone), so I must live with the single aspect of the book I dislike. I have raised my rating from one star to four. I still hope that for the second edition, the authors will reconsider their needless criticism of gun owners, et al.

EARLIER REVIEW: The author takes unnecessary potshots at too many people and ends up shooting himself in the foot, as far as I'm concerned. I was excited about reading this book and sharing it with my teenagers until the author started belittling conservatives in general. Attacking bad ideas and dumb individuals--specific ideas and specific individuals--is fine with me, but attacking huge swaths of people solely because they own guns or belong to the Republican Party is no smarter than insulting a whole race or religion because you dislike one characteristic of some of its members. Take the high road instead, and make a logical argument against that characteristic. It's the people at whom you are sneering that you most need to convince.

The primary means the government uses to control us isn't secrecy; it's our disdain for each other. It's so easy to trigger that disdain and make people support a bad policy, if it appears to be sticking it to our (apparent) political enemies. If the author revises the book and deletes the mudslinging, I'll buy that version and recommend it to others. The current version has left a bad taste in my mouth.

Much needed, mixed results
By Paul O'Connor
The author's concept, communicating basic economic theory through a graphic novel is very interesting and creative. It must have been terribly difficult to achieve such a good result in so few pages.

The odd thing about the book is that you whiz from Adam Smith to the 1950's in about 1/2 of the book and then you hit an increasingly political diatribe and the deft talent that the author showed in the first half of the book for quickly describing complicated and difficult topics starts to disappear, replaced by an increasingly tone-deaf one-sided one-size-fits-all philosophy. This is too bad as the author does a VERY nice job of laying out his arguments and would have been considerably more convincing if he had come across as a teacher who has lots of disturbing questions about the official line instead of as a person who knows everything.

In spite of the disappointment at the end, the book earns 4 stars from me for two reasons:
- The first part of the book is solid gold and should be required reading for every high school student
- The author admited that he was going over the edge before he got too far into his arguments. This kind of self-awareness is rare in textbook authors and I encourage more to emulate the author's confidence and sense of humor

A Strong Foundation in Economics!
By Nate Weida
What an incredible way to learn about the history of economics. I was skeptical as I began to tiptoe into this book, already thinking I was a lost cause as it related to understanding how money, business, and government worked. But, Economix makes its subject fascinating and understandable. Goodwin somehow makes our history clear and often hilarious, although it's justifiably a tragic humor.

This book has given me clearer understanding of market crashes, communism, the New Deal, laissez-faire, etc. The collaboration between Goodwin and his illustrator, Burr, is solid.

Goodwin expresses his wish for the book to be a foundation for people learning about economics and I can't imagine a stronger one.

Most Talkative: Stories from the Front Lines of Pop Culture, by Andy Cohen

The man behind the Real Housewives writes about his lifelong love affair with pop culture that brought him from the suburbs of St. Louis to his own television show
From a young age, Andy Cohen knew one thing: He loved television. Not in the way that most kids do, but in an irrepressible, all-consuming, I-want-to-climb-inside-the-tube kind of way. And climb inside he did. Now presiding over Bravo's reality TV empire, he started out as an overly talkative pop culture obsessive, devoted to Charlie's Angels and All My Children and to his mother, who received daily letters from Andy at summer camp, usually reminding her to tape the soaps. In retrospect, it's hard to believe that everyone didn't know that Andy was gay; still, he remained in the closet until college. Finally out, he embarked on making a career out of his passion for television.
The journey begins with Andy interviewing his all-time idol Susan Lucci for his college newspaper and ends with him in a job where he has a hand in creating today's celebrity icons. In the witty, no-holds-barred style of his show Watch What Happens Live, Andy tells tales of absurd mishaps during his ten years at CBS News, hilarious encounters with the heroes and heroines of his youth, and the real stories behind The Real Housewives. Dishy, funny, and full of heart, Most Talkative provides a one-of-a-kind glimpse into the world of television, from a fan who grew up watching the screen and is now inside it, both making shows and hosting his own.

My Date with Susan Lucci

I'm standing on the corner of Sixty-seventh and Columbus Avenue in Manhattan waiting for a meeting that will change my life. It's December 11, 1987. I'm nineteen years old and about to have my first encounter with a celebrity. Not just any celebrity. The Queen of Daytime, and my first diva: Susan Lucci.

I fell in love with Erica Kane the summer before my freshman year of high school. Like all red-blooded teen American boys, I'd come home from water polo practice and eat a box of Entenmann's Pop'Ems donut holes in front of the TV while obsessively fawning over All My Children and Erica, her clothes, and her narcissistic attitude. My sister Em and I even got my mom into the show. Which was a coup because Evelyn Cohen doesn't suffer fools: She gets the New York Times—not Soap Opera Digest—delivered to our house in St. Louis. And in general, Jewish women don't tend to sit around watching soaps. Don't ask me why.

Dinner "conversation" at the Cohens' meant my sister, mom, and I relaying in brutal detail the day's events in a state of amplified hysteria, while my father listened to his own smooth jazz station in his head. After dinner, my dad would rejoin the living, and I would inevitably hear the three words I dreaded more than anything else: "Wanna play catch?"

No, I did not want to play catch. Ever.

I would turn to my mom for a reprieve, who would instead give me a look that was simultaneously threatening and begging. "Just humor your father and go TOSS THE DAMN BALL!" I got out of it most times by just making a run for it and sliding into my home base, in front of the TV.

Susan Lucci was the biggest star in the daytime galaxy, and she served it up hot and fresh and chic five days a week. Before there was Joan Collins's Alexis Morrell Carrington Colby Dexter Rowan on Dynasty, there was Erica Kane Martin Brent Cudahy Chandler Montgomery Montgomery Chandler Marick Marick Montgomery on All My Children.

A few months earlier, the professor in my Boston University news writing and reporting class assigned us a feature story and challenged us to nab an interview with one of our idols. He said if we got someone good, we could get our article published in the BU newspaper. Finally, my ticket to something big—a byline—and a chance to meet and interview one of my two idols: Susan Lucci or Sam Donaldson.

I didn't say Sam Donaldson just to impress my professor, either. I really loved him. During the Reagan years, he was the only member of the White House press corps who actually asked the man a direct question and held him accountable. (To this day, when I'm interviewing someone, I try to channel Sam. Of course, today my hardest-hitting interviews are usually with Real Housewives.) My admiration for Donaldson aside, when you give yourself two celebrity options on an assignment like this, you can bet that the one without the weird hair system is going to win every time.

I wrote Lucci's publicist an impassioned declaration of love, which secured me an interview, which was then postponed . . . multiple times . . . until this day. Fearful that I was one more postponement away from cancellation, I woke up at 7 a.m. and began calling that publicist's office to nail down the details and get my instructions for the day. All I knew was that I was supposed to meet Susan Lucci. The rest was a mystery, and I wanted it solved. I dialed and dialed and the phone rang and rang. By 9 a.m. I was convinced this interview, like the others, wasn't going to happen. But I was already in New York City! I couldn't go home empty-handed. Ruefully, I decided that Sam Donaldson's publicist never would have blown me off, if Sam Donaldson indeed even had a publicist. Probably not. Sam Donaldson was too down-to-earth, and there's no way a publicist would have just let that hair thing go.

Three hours after I'd begun, I deliberately punched in the now memorized sequence of numbers in a last-ditch effort. One ring. Two rings. Three, four, five, six, seven . . . and then someone, an assistant I guess, finally picked up. I was told to report to the ABC studios on the Upper West Side at 12:30. And that's how I learned that people in New York don't start working until 10 a.m. How cushy.

I get momentarily dizzy when I see the marquee that says, "In Pine Valley, Anything Can Happen." Of course, I've arrived outside the studio an hour early wearing bar mitzvah attire: button-down, paisley tie, sport jacket, and a trench coat that could have been from the Mini-Dan Rather Collection. My hair is more awkward than normal, as I'm in the midst of growing it out to Deadhead perfection. I tamed the Jewfro when I woke up, but its stability is threatened by the humidity of an unseasonably warm December day.

But I haven't shown up with sixty minutes to spare just to stand around and gawk like a tourist. I have something else on my agenda. In addition to the Lucci interview, I'm working on a creative writing paper examining whether Pine Valley is an accurate representation of society. (Just the sort of deep topic my parents expected me to be exploring when they signed my enormous BU tuition check.) I've brought my tape recorder to nab on-the-street interviews with actors from the show.

Occasionally a Pine Valley "resident" walks out of the stage door and I first internally freak out ("OMG IT'S CLIFF!"), then attack them with my recorder. I see myself as a Sam Donaldson type; they probably see me as a John Hinckley Jr. type.

"IS PINE VALLEY AN ACCURATE REFLECTION OF SOCIETY?!" I yell at every familiar face in a high-pitched panic. They are all initially terrified and must take a moment to process what is happening: overly hyper kid with tape recorder and 'fro yelling stupid question. Once they realize I'm probably not going to shoot any of them to impress Jodie Foster, I get quick interviews with "Donna," "Cliff," "Ross," "Travis" (who has dried shaving cream on his ear), and even the man who plays Palmer's butler, "Jasper." Their answers are gripping—"Not really." "No." "Maybe."

At 12:30, euphoric after my journalistic ramp-up to the main event, I walk into the building and announce that I'm there as a guest of Ms. Lucci. "Susan Lucci," I say, triumphantly. "I am Andrew Cohen and I am here to see Susan Lucci."

The guard nonchalantly mumbles into a microphone, and his voice crackles over a loudspeaker, "Susan Lucci, guest in the lobby." I am stunned at his informality and offended by his lack of respect when summoning the actress who plays Erica Kane.

I wait in terror, convinced that something, yet again, will go awry: I've gotten the day wrong, or Ms. Lucci's changed her mind. Or it could go exactly as I'd imagined—a minion would appear to spirit me away to Erica Kane's penthouse lair. After a couple of minutes, the double doors open, and she glides toward me. Susan Lucci. Radiant. Confident. Really, really small. Like, child-sized, even. My moment of disconcertion at how this person who is larger than life to me could be so alarmingly pint-sized is short-lived, as she opens her mouth to speak.

"You must be Andrew," she coos.

She is wearing a red knit dress, red hoop earrings, black heels, a full-length mink coat, and massive sunglasses. Her hair is teased three stories high: a masterpiece of eighties glamour and engineering.

I finally stammer out something that sounds like "HI!"

"Well, I hope you like Mexican food, Andrew, because I'm taking you to lunch," she purrs.

In fact, I hate Mexican food. I have a lifelong aversion to beans, and I wanted to see the studio. On the other hand: Susan Lucci and I are going to lunch? On a date? ¡Me gusta!

"Oh my god, I looooove Mexican food!" I scream.

The publicist shows up just as we're walking out of the building. She's tall, wearing a butter-leather jacket, with frosted hair pulled back, a smoker's voice, and an air of cosmopolitan authority. We walk a few blocks to a restaurant called Santa Fe. On the way, some nutbag on the street asks Lucci if she received his card.

"Your card?" she asks. She seems concerned. "Oh nooo, I didn't! I'll check with the guard," she says very sincerely, turning to me with a wink. She and I know she'll not be checking with the guard. I'm in on the joke with Susan—on the inside of inside. I marvel at her ability to be tolerant and kind with this weirdo, making him feel as if he really matters to her, treating him as nicely as she's treating me. As we get further down the street, a guy in a truck yells, "Erica Kane! We love you!" She waves. I imagine little cartoon birds fluttering down to pick up the hem of her mink coat so it doesn't drag on the ground.

At the restaurant, we sit down at the table, and Susan and her publicist start talking quietly about a photo shoot that's coming up, and Susan says that ABC "has finally gotten it right." Susan is happy. I can't believe how super-confidential their convo feels. There is a business behind this soap I've spent my life ogling from my seat on a sofa in the middle of the country, and it is fascinating. I zero in on what Susan said about ABC "finally getting it right." What was wrong before? I wonder. Was Susan unhappy with ABC? Perhaps, as our friendship deepens, she will learn that she can trust me enough to confide in me regarding these matters. Strictly off the record, of course.

By the time they remember I'm there and turn to me, I'm convinced that my hair has expanded at least an inch in diameter since Sixty-seventh Street.

They ask me about my major, my goals. I am absolutely bullish on my future, and tell them awwwwlllll about it, while they sit there, nodding patiently, smiling patiently, and agreeing patiently. I tell them that I'm a sophomore Broadcast Journalism major and I want to be the next Dan Rather. Then, hearing myself say that and realizing that Dan Rather barely ever goes through an interview blathering about his hopes and dreams, I abruptly start reading from a list of questions I've prepared about Erica Kane:

"Is Erica mo...

Engaging - wonderfully written
By KH3483
I'm almost halfway through the book, but have to share for those "on the fence" this is a very engaging wonderfully written book. Andy Cohen knows how to tell a story, and the most important story, his life. He spares readers the chronological boredom laid out in 99% of other autobiographies. The book reads more like he's a new friend you've met, and he's telling you stories about himself over a series of weekly lunch dates.

You're drawn in immediately if pop culture is one of your interests. I suspect any reader even slightly interested in Andy or any of his efforts would experience the same result. He's honest, he puts his feelings out there, and if something is wrong to him, he says so. The instinct for most people writing a book of this nature would be to "tread lightly" or buckle under so as not to incur controversy. Cohen sticks to what is important, and conveying his feelings about matters that hurt him emotionally are wide open territory he guides the reader through skillfully and in appearance, effortlessly.

He admits his mistakes and he puts everything out there. It truly is like a series of interesting conversations with a brand new friend... one that won't stop talking. And you won't want him to stop, because it's stuff you always wanted to know.

It's Like Finding An Extra Order of Fries In Your Bag...
By L. Burt
This book is SOOO MUCH FUN! It feels like you called up your best friend, Andy Cohen, who tells you about his day...only he's hilarious, his day involves famous people, and before you know it, you've talked for five hours. While a lot of moms that I know were reading a certain erotic fiction book on Mother's Day, part of my Mother's Day present was getting to read aloud hysterical excerpts to my husband ALL DAY from MOST TALKATIVE, while eating a Confetti Cake Blizzard. Best. Mother's Day. Ever.

Bravo, Andy!
By SouthernMama
I pre-ordered Andy's book as soon as I found out its release date. I got it yesterday, and I could not put it down! I'm a fan of all things Bravo-related, but I absolutely love Andy. If possible, I love him even more after reading his book. I felt like I was sitting down, reminiscing with an old friend. I laughed, I cried (his coming out story was so touching), and I found myself totally engrossed with the story of how he came to be the successful producer he is today. If you're a Housewives fan, there's plenty of juicy tidbits you don't see or hear on the shows, and even if you're not a Housewives fan, you'll enjoy the stories about the many celebrities he's worked with or encountered throughout his career. He also shared many pictures that had me laughing (especially his ponytail days...) Bravo, Andy -- you should be proud!

From Library Journal
Chosen by fate to become the Dragon Reborn--savior and destroyer of his world--young Rand al'Thor attempts to outrun his destiny by joining in a mad search for the lost Horn of Valere. Continuing the story begun in The Eye of the World ( LJ 2/15/90), Jordan creates a lush, sprawling tapestry of a novel in the tradition of Tolkien and Eddings. Recommended where fantasy is popular.

Review

“Jordan has come to dominate the world that Tolkien began to reveal.... The battle scenes have the breathless urgency of firsthand experience, and the ... evil laced into the forces of good, the dangers latent in any promised salvation, the sense of the unavoidable onslaught of unpredictable events bear the marks of American national experience during the last three decades.” ―Edward Rothstein, The New York Times

“Those who like fantasy can rejoice. This is the genuine article ... characters you can care about, a world you can believe in, hideous monsters, battles, magic, even love.... I only have one problem. How am I going to get by until the next volume comes out?” ―John Lee, author of The Unicorn Solution

“Rousing, slam-bang ... full of valiant skirmishes, great heroes, and close rescues. The real war is only beginning, but this one battle at least ends with the sort of grand finale worth re-reading a time or two.” ―Locus

Can't do women characters well, but still worth reading in doses
By marialuisa
I really do like high fantasy and Robert Jordan created a universe, replete with a fully thought out magic system that works. No, I don't think that he's anywhere near the writer Tolkien was, but he is pretty darn good. That being said, he has a really difficult time with creating women characters. I get tired of the pettiness he writes into them over the slightest thing. The completely pointless snotty attitude that Nynaeve gives to Moraine (and pretty much all the other women) makes me want to slap her. We have this great myth in our culture that women cannot get along with each other. Usually it's posed as an issue over competition for a male. And the myth is perpetuated by insecure men who really don't know much about and who feel threatened by women. Each of the three male protagonists has an internal dialogue about how women are "different", "think strangely" etc. Is there some other reason he keeps making us seem so bitchy? I'm pretty tired of both of the two poses that he gives the women too: standing with their arms crossed under their breasts and standing with fists planted on their hips. Neither one is too attractive. I really, really want to like this series more than I think I do. I'm in the fourth book of the series though and it's definitely time for a break. Jordan is a competent writer and has moments that are close to excellence but they fade. In the context of the universe that he created though, the books are an enjoyable if not great to read. If you can go and give it a break for a bit and go back to it, it probably works better than if you read straight through and live in the universe that The Wheel of Time for a while. After the fourth volume, I'm out of it for a while. Good for escapist beach reading. since I live in Hawaii, that works for me, so long as I get past the shallow female characters he devises.

If you liked the first novel in this series you will enjoy ...
By Casey
If you liked the first novel in this series you will enjoy this book. As with the rest of the series, just stick with it and try not to predict anything of the characters! (I suffered from expecting way too much of the characters.) I highly recommend purchasing an audible version of this novel because they are long books and the pace can be slow. Much more enjoyable if listening to extended parts of the book.

One intense hunting trip
By High Fantasy Reader
Slightly shorter than Eye of the World, but slightly faster paced, the Great Hunt matches the bar set by the original and drives the story forward.

The two things about the Wheel of Time that I enjoy the most are probably the characterization and the worldbuilding. The various cultures and lands are well-fleshed out, and Jordan develops every place that the heroes stop by on the adventure. Shienar was an excellent example, along with Tar Valon. The characters are at a high caliber, the writing is well-done and descriptive, the story is excellent, the plot is slightly tighter than the first book, and Jordan manages to incorporate some of the grit of real life without turning this into an R-rated book. . . .Though I admit it would probably have been better if he had. ;)

Minor bits of goodness mixed in include: The concept of the Heron-mark is cool, the characters' magical powers actually progress over time (I wish Terry Goodkind had copied THIS part instead of ripping off the Aes Sedai), the plot is complex and requires intelligence to keep up with, no ham-handed messages or foreshadowing, realistic take on learning and using swordplay, and some definite moments of hilarity.

Sad to say, there are still a couple of problems. Some of the characters are starting to get on my nerves, particularly Nynaeve, who never develops out of her two-dimensional role. Egwene is working her way up there, too, though she's not very annoying compared to Nynaeve.I'd also like to know what strange problem is inducing the female characters to "sniff" every few chapters.

The plot is good most of the time. There are a few definite places where it moves along a bit slowly, though it is an improvement from the first book. I have the same problem with the Wheel of Time that I do with the latter books of a Song of Ice and Fire; there are too many damn chapters where we're taken away from the action and getting into the heads of random people along the way. If an author does this, then we should at least be taken right into some tense excitement somewhere. I don't really care about Bayle Domon mulling things over while gloating over his cuendillar collection, or some exotic goons from across the sea arriving to take over villages and make them swear oaths of loyalty. Can we get back to Egwene/Elayne at the White Tower and Rand/Mat/Perrin hunting the Horn, please? The plot is wonderfully structured and engaging and all, with a better resolution than the first book, but that sometimes makes the interruptions all the more annoying.

The Great Hunt is at times frustrating, but patience is rewarded with a good storyline and characters. A solid 4 stars out of five.

Great resource!
By angnelz
I am using this grade level and the K-2 book together with a small group of 3rd grade boys and girls with behavior needs who also needed some guidance away from egotism and onto optimism. Coupled with yoga and additional whole-class activities, we are making progress. We start and end each meeting with a triangle chime that the kids use to focus. When the echo of the chime is done, we begin or end; which is a great centering activity itself. They have enjoyed the hands-on experiments, art activities, and learning how the brain contributes to our ability to pay attention to detail, drown out the distractions, and appreciate the little things. This curriculum is easy to use, most days I can prep it just 5-10min before the lesson is held. Some lessons require household supplies, but are easy to acquire and can be creatively substituted. 4 stars becuase some of the content was a little "heavy" or too difficult for the 3rd graders, so I used ideas/references in the K-2 book. Easy enough to do this, when you have both books. Could prob use the K-2 book alone for 3rd graders and beef up the ideas or go a little deeper with the theme.

Teaching meditation concepts
By dmriverview
Gives great suggestions about how to introduce meditation concepts in an easy to follow, creative manner. I especially loved the "brain bottle" containing sand, glitter and water to show what an "agitated brain" looks like and how meditation teaches it to calm down. I use it with my adult clients as well when I expalin how the amygdala creates chaos in our brains when we're upset.

The Book I have been searching for!
By TeacherMama
I was looking for something that would tie my classroom management strategy neatly into a single package but have not found that magic missing piece. My school district uses several different programs (Capturing Kids Hearts, Kids at Hope, and some of the schools use Make You Day). I like to share with my students WHY it is important to Choose Kind (from the book Wonder (our first read aloud of the year). I have tried incorporating things from Whole Brain Teaching and even Kagan Strategies but it all seemed so disjointed.

Until now!!! This book teaches the students about the brain and how different parts of the brain respond to different things. It teaches students how they respond to stress and why. It teaches them to recognize which part of their brain is in control and then asks them if that is truly the part that should be in charge OR if there is a better decision that they should be making.

As if that is not enough, the author took the time to tie each of the lessons to CCSS standards so teachers can justify the use of it in the classroom. There are additional books (literature) you can use as read alouds to help make each topic come to life. Each unit is meant to last 2 weeks and the book is designed to be taught over the course of the year. I love how it ties in the sense and some great science lessons.

This is excellent for your ADHD, Shy, and students with anger issues. I cannot wait to begin to use it this upcoming school year.

Love that I can play things that sound like the classics
By Izmadiz
I have minimal piano playing skills, am an adult teaching myself.

I hate using the beginner's books with songs like "Mr. Turtle goes slow" or "The Blue Coyote." One, I have no idea if what I am am playing sounds right and well, they're childish.

So, I love that these are simple enough for me to attempt (not all are easy, but I'm working my skills up)and I can tell if I'm getting them to sound right (if I haven't heard the song I can youtube it. About 80% of the songs I can hear someone play although sometimes if the chosen selection is not the opening theme of the song I have difficulty finding it). Plus it's "grown up."

Definitely one of my favorite easy level books.

Excellent for What It Aspires To Be
By Elisa 20
I read many of the reviews here and wasn't sure if this book was what I was looking for. Would it be "too easy"? "Too hard"? "Too short?" "Too simplified"? Or, as many said, perfect for his/ her level.

Fortunately, for me it turned out to be just what I was looking for. But I do understand how difficult choosing the right level could be. This says it's a "Beginner's" book--not an "Intermediate's"--and I think that's right. You should be able to read music two octaves up from middle "C" and one octave below, but the base is simple--usually one or two notes at a time, many slow selections and almost every song is in the key of C or F.

Even as someone who doesn't sight read well, I can play the pieces from the beginning with both hands--slowly. This is a good level for me--feels very "doable" but also a challenge as my practices begin rather haltingly. I feel my sight reading is improving because the notation doesn't overwhelm a beginner with too many notes at a time.

Some people were frustrated that the pieces were short excerpts of classics--1-3 pages of music. (The notes are nice and large, by the way, which I found very helpful) For me, I really liked the shortness of the pieces because the easiest ones made good warmups and, since I don't sight read well, I appreciated the variety of options. Three pieces I recommend that I enjoyed and feel are among the easier ones are:

"Chopin's Nocturne in E flat" (arranged to be in C ). It has part of the accompaniment in the treble clef and part with bass so, while its simple bass and melody lines, it's good "thinking exercise" to switch between them as you play. Plus, it's a slow, pretty piece, nice to warmup with. Another good one for beginners (like me) is "Brahms Lullaby". And I liked "The Waltz of the Sugar Plum Fairy", too.

Nice variety--9 from Bach, 8 from Beethoven, 7 Chopin, 9 Mozart, 8 Tchaikovsky plus 1 or 2 each from Bartok, Brahms, Clementi, Debussy, Dvorak, Foster, Gluck, Grieg, Handel, Haydn, Liszt, MacDowell, Mendelsohn, Moussorgsky, Paderewski, Rameau, Rachmaninoff, Rubinstein, Saint-Saens, Satie, Scarlatti, Schubert, Schumann, Scriabin, Sibelius, Strauss,Verdi, Vivaldi, and Wagner. A very nice variety--good as a refresher (many were familiar but not by name and someI -should- have known, but didn't).

There are also little "factoids" above each piece--a few sentences of interesting information about the music or the composer. Fingering suggestions are also included. I found this a very motivating and enjoyable book at my beginning level and great for warmups/improving sight reading in a pleasurable way.

OK very simple arrangements, good exercising value for a "middle-stage" beginner
By a reader
These are significantly simplified short excerpts from classical masterpieces. If you want something longer and otherwise closer to the original, look elsewhere.
On the other hand, this book may work for beginners who want to supplement their technique development with musically meaningful exercises (often based on well-known classical melodies). It is probably way too much for early beginners and too little for "advanced beginners".
This book contains all the material from "My First Book of Classical Music: 29 Themes by Beethoven, Mozart, Chopin and Other Great Composers in Easy Piano Arrangements" and "My First Book of Great Composers..." by the same authors, and much more.
