Kem Nunn's Homerun

Kem Nunn is not as prolific as a James Patterson(frequently co-authored) or a Michael Connelly,churning out a book annually or biannually. This is a calculated, measured,researched,mystery novel.At times, laugh-out loud funny. This novel is a microcosm of life in the second decade of the 2000's.Addressing divorce,psychotherapy,bureaucracy and America's ever changing ethnic landscape.Peeling back layers of when the formerly well-heeled find themselves down at the heels.Much like Mr.Nunn's other novels,e.g.Tijuana Straits,the locales(Cali/Mex Border v. San Francisco)are as much characters, in these novels, as well as the main protagonists Fahey&Chance,respectively.For the money,Mr.Nunn's releases are a must read.There isn't a writer I've read who understands the complexities and undercurrents of the male psyche and what men will do to redeem themselves for their transgressions.Simply said,This novel is worth your time and money.

In the tradition of Robert Stone

I love the story line of an American male getting himself in over his head. Embracing noir but not limited by it, Nun guides the reader to an exciting conclusion, but the protagonist has no guide, except a dysfunctional paramilitary under life hero, a shady antiques dealer and the classic office assistant. The hero is a sinner and the reader is a voyeur. It's a train wreck, page by page. Dr. Chance, who you might catch yourself thinking is a hapless detective rather than a nueropsychiatrist, lets himself descend into a bottomless pit, populated by evil characters, and in a twist that achieves some kind of grandeur, the anti-hero Blackstone surprises us all. This is a good story well told. It's not a work of location fiction, as were Dogs of Winter and even Tijuana Straights, but the characters are superb.

Not one I would recommend

I'm kind of blown away by all of the five star reviews on here. My reaction to CHANCE was basically, "meh". I came close to not finishing it, and its definitely not one I would recommend to a friend. I gave it three stars, because even though I didn't really love the story, Kem Nunn is obviously a talented writer. Much like his other books, the characters are fascinating and I love how bits of them are revealed over the course of the story. The characters of Dr. Chance and Big D in particular are what kept me going through this book. Every time I was ready to bail out, something would happen with those two that kept me reading.

I just read TAPPING THE SOURCE a week or two ago, and that book truly was a five star novel from start to finish. Maybe reading them back to back, I was more disappointed by CHANCE than some other readers.

So what specifically didn't I like about the book? For starters, just from my personal taste, there are three plot devices that I hate: time travel, amnesia and split personalities. This book unfortunately involves the last one, and I'm not sure what it really adds to the story. My bigger criticism though is that the story just seemed to go out of focus so much. There is a pretty clear and sometimes interesting plot in here involving a misguided love interest and a dangerous bad cop/husband. I think if the book had stayed with that story more clearly it would have been more enjoyable. Instead it strays at times into musings or events happen in unclear ways.

Anyway, its not a bad book, but in all honesty I've read many better novels lately, and this isn't one I would be quick to recommend to anyone.

Few words from a sailor.. about an awesome story.

I haven't finished reading Wolfsong yet, on account of that it arrived today, but I can easily say that within the first chapter I've been hooked!

Lets start at the top, with the writing style.

L. T. Bradley's ability to write is superb, rivalling that of J.R.R. Tolkien and C. S. Lewis(Oh yes fanboys, I went there) She gives detail where it is due, and leaves enough to the imagination. Her ability to create characters is strong, they're all very diverse, but have enough to keep them in common with the story AND each other (Important in my eyes!) And location... picking a not-so-small town out in-the-middle-of-nowhere California was a great choice.

Now on to the book itself

Wolfsong starts out with a very dark, and easy to put to mind beginning, building suspense, and then slowly allowing it to drop back to normal. A few of the events foreshadow others. The Characters interract and seem to know each other(Which makes me hope theres a prequel somewhere later on!)

Please.. for the love of all that is holy... don't stop writing! you're talented and ambitious! As I read your novel I can literally (and figuratively) see how the gears were turning in your head. Keep it up!!

Great Read - hard to put down!

I love supernatural stories and this one delivered. I enjoyed reading about a heroine that isn't a wimp! Zoe rocks! The characters are solid and well thought out. You can tell the writer carefully crafted this novel. It reminds me of the TV series Supernatural. I am a big fan of Supernatural so I'm giving a HUGE compliment here!

This is an exciting and fun read. I enjoyed it and I can say that I'm becoming a fan of L. T. Bradley. I'll definitely be checking out more books written by her.

The only reason I gave this 4 stars instead of 5 was due to the formatting issues. I purchased the Kindle edition and there are a lot of areas that words do not have spaces between them. Also some pages are not formatted correctly. Just needs a bit more proofing is all.

it is written along the lines of a college textbook and not a like a detective thriller

I actually have mixed feelings about this book. For those of you that are considering buying this book, in my opinion, it is written along the lines of a college textbook and not a like a detective thriller. On the one hand, I found it to be an interesting historical resource with a wealth of information. Unfortunately, I also found it to be laborious to read at times, it was just information overload. The author would start to get into some meaty information and catch my interest, just to stop almost in mid thought and pose page after page, chapter after chapter of genealogy.

Mr. Wayne used several writings from gnostic, esoteric and non-christian sources and even though he would qualify his presentation of the material, the interspersing with christian theology throughout, became hard at times, to ascertain the true message.

What caused some red flags for me, was how he continually quoted the Quran without chapter or verse to back his claims that the Quran supports the facts that the Old Testament, New Testament are 100% correct (which of course they are) and that Jesus is the Son of God (and He is). In all honesty, I have never read the Quran, but I have never heard a Muslum corroborate this and in fact, they staunchly support an opposite point of view. In his closing chapter he grouped all monotheistic religions as being equal and in direct contention with the Antichrist pantheistic religions. Again I could be wrong, and he stated to the contrary, but it sounds like what he is promoting is Christlam.

Thought provoking! This book is an amazing collection of historical information. The author weaves together ancient legends and historical records reaching back into prehistory to build his case for The Genesis 6 Conspiracy. An intriguing philosophy of underworld evil spanning human history! A "must read" for anyone researching the identity of the Nephilim of Genesis.
