I dig Freud!

Yes, it's true that he pretty much reduced everything to sex in some way or other. But if you go beyond that little foible then you see that SF was one of the most brilliant people of the last century, without doubt. There's a section in here on his analysis of jokes and why we tell them that is priceless. And if you are honest with yourself then you will have to admit that he is exactly right on target. This book has definitely spurred my interest in the field and SF himself. I do think that the author glosses over SF's religious views and writings a little too glibly, as though he thinks that SF really didn't believe what he wrote. I actually think that these are some of the most profound of Freud's writings and some that I definitely intend to pursue further. All in all though, this is definitely worth your time and money.

A fabulous short introduction to Freud's thought

This is one of the best (and definitely among the longest) of the books that I have read in the Very Short Introduction series. I have to confess at the outset that I'm not a fan of Freud. Over the years I've dipped into his work from time to time, but each time have found him off putting and many of his ideas counter intuitive. It was helpful for me to realize that many others, including psychologists like Anthony Storr, also find much of what Freud wrote to be either wrong or in need of considerable emendation. I was always sceptical that our dreams (or at least my dreams) had the kind of structure that Freud insisted that they did. And I felt his reasoning about the sexualization of desires of very small children implied a vastly more sophisticated understanding of sex than I possessed as a young child. I have found the object-relations school to be infinitely more persuasive than Freud on child-mother or child-father attachments, and not just because that school actually saw a major role for the mother compared to Freud. I was also hurt in my explorations of Freud by reading what Storr argues are his worst books, things like MOSES AND MONOTHEISM, which I frankly found absurd, or his book on jokes.

So, my impression over the years was that Freud was borderline silly. I credited him with causing us to take more seriously child development and to acknowledge the centrality of sexuality in our lives, but I found the general contours of his thought to be quite unhelpful in understanding my own life. I must admit that I was also put off Freud by a host of writers who misused psychology in exploring everyday life. I once was talking to my professor at Yale, Paul L. Holmer, about W. Jackson Bates's great biography of Samuel Johnson. He thought it one of the truly great books on Johnson, but was uneasy with Bates's tendency to attribute Johnson's fundamental beliefs to one or another psychological cause, in particular his religious beliefs. Holmer argued that the biographer was justified in examining why someone might wash his or her hands 30 times a day, but had missed the point in attempting to use Freud to explain why someone believed in God.

So, while I understood just how large Freud loomed in our culture, I never found him to be that impressive as a thinker. I still don't. However, Storr did manage to make a case for Freud on many levels while at the same time fairly and soberly pointing out his legitimate achievements alongside his unfortunate failures. He clearly admires Freud while still not hesitating to acknowledge where he went off track. He also does an exceptionally fine job of making clear Freud's main ideas. I came away from the book with a clearer and fuller picture of Freud than ever.

I'm now at the point where I actually want to read more by and about Freud. I have long owned a copy of Peter Gay's celebrated biography as well as his large selection of Freud's writings published by Norton. After reading Storr I'm far more likely to do so. But Storr also provides an absolutely splendid annotated list of suggestions for further reading. One of the best aspects of the Very Short Introductions series are the bibliographies and this may well be the best one that I've seen yet. If I do go on to read more about Freud, Storr's Further Reading will certainly guide me.

This book is a very good general view of freud's ideas, theories, and views. I would recommend it if you are just stating out. It has clear language too. However it is not terribly indepth so be forewarned that it may not meet all needs. It is a good general resource though.

About the Author
Barbara Mitchell is a human resources professional and management consultant who is a recognized expert in the HR field. She is co-author of The Essential HR Handbook. Prior to co-founding The Millennium Group International, LLC, much of her HR career was spent with Marriott International. She is now managing partner of The Mitchell Group, a HR consulting practice.

In "The Big Book of HR," Mitchell and Gamlem, both seasoned practitioners, have compiled not just HR laws, regulations, and standards, but they have armed the HR practitioner with a hands-on human resources management guide. This is not a textbook to study and then put on the shelf to collect dust. Easy to comprehend, it is packed full of practical experience from HR professionals and successful business leaders. "The Big Book of HR" does reference relevant legal statues that frame the field but it is much more.

Whether you are a HR specialist or solo generalist, a supervisor with HR oversight, even a small business owner wearing multiple hats, you will find "The Big Book of HR" easy to read and applicable with tips and techniques to help any business leader succeed. A great resource for HR

The Big Book of HR provides a complete overview of human resources. It covers topics including recruiting, compensation, benefits, employee performance development, technology, and potential impact.

That's the dry account.

The rich account is this: The Big Book of HR provides some terrific insight into the day-to-day responsibilities in an HR office. The book examines concepts, includes definitions, has links to resources, and ends each chapter with discussion questions. It covers a lot of ground.

The drawback for such a great book is that it's in print. Links will quickly become outdated. Social media strategies will change. Laws will change.

But that's life.

I would highly recommend this book for anyone just starting out in HR, is thinking about HR, or would like some ideas for alternative thoughts and ideas.

A profound book by a consistently profound author

In Huxley's books, its not just the plot that captivates. Huxley's insights on society and people are so on target and so truthful, it's amazing. His ability to translate truth into words is incredible. Point Counterpoint is no exception:

"Work's no more respectable than alcohol, and it serves exactly the same purpose: it just distracts the mind, makes a man forget himself. Work's simply a drug, that's all. It's humiliating that men shouldn't be able to live without drugs, soberly; it's humiliating that they shouldn't have the courage to see the world and themselves as they really are."

"But there is in debauchery something so intrinsically dull, something so absolutely and hopelessly dismal, that it is only the rarest beings, gifted with much less than the usual amount of intelligence and much more than the usual intensity of appetite, who can go on actively enjoying a regular course of vice or continue actively to believe in its wickedness."

"But the very possession of a body is a cynical comment on the soul and all its ways. It is a piece of cynicism, however, which the soul must accept, whether it likes it or no."

If these statements strike you as surprisingly truthful, then Huxley is for you.

The theme of Point Counterpoint concerns the mind/body dichotomy, which I think is really interesting. It makes you think about yourself a little differently than you may be used to.

Point, not counterpoint

Aldous Huxley's 1928 novel opens with a grand London party given by Lady Edward Tantamount. Music plays. Dozens of characters cross the stage, meet briefly, argue, and part. Some go on to a restaurant that stays open past midnight; there, they meet still more characters and argue some more; several of them continue to yet another party in the early hours of the morning. We are now 100 pages into the book, a quarter of the way through. The numerous characters will continue to bump into each other over the next days and months, but the essential texture of the opening will not change.

If you Google the title, the question comes back "Did you mean Point Counterpoint?" Well, no. Counterpoint is a musical term implying line and movement: two or more voices, intertwining with one another, echoing, developing, but never standing still. Huxley certainly understands that music implies movement -- his descriptions of actual music are superb -- but his method as a novelist is essentially static: to set characters off against one another, each of whom represents a different point of view. The book is thus a series of debates, some funny, some serious, all clever. But the characters ricochet off one another like balls on a pool table; this is truly a matter of point clashing with point; there is no line, little movement, and almost no plot.

Oddly enough, Huxley has one of his characters, a writer, criticize his own method: "Novel of ideas. The character of each personage must be implied, as far as possible, in the ideas of which he is the mouthpiece. In so far as theories are rationalizations of sentiments, instincts, dispositions of soul, this is feasible. The chief defect of the novel of ideas is that you must write about people who have ideas to express -- which excludes all but about .01 per cent of the human race." And again: "The great defect of the novel of ideas is that it's a made-up affair. Necessarily; for people who can reel off neatly formulated notions aren't quite real; they're slightly monstrous. Living with monsters becomes rather tiresome in the long run." He has it right; this book IS a made-up affair, it IS tiresome, and its .01 percent of the human race consists of a handful of English aristocrats and intellectuals -- Huxley as a kind of egghead Evelyn Waugh.

Several times, I almost tossed the book away, yet kept on reading -- why? The first time was when Huxley introduces Mark Rampion, a painter and would-be novelist closely based on his friend D. H. Lawrence. Here is a character who does not come from the upper classes, whose thoughts are three-dimensional and fully worked out, and whose unconventional yet bracing morality serves as a touchstone for the other characters in the book. The chapter describing his courtship is one of the few passages where the novel of ideas becomes one of feeling, and it was riveting. Although nothing quite like that chapter comes again, I kept on because I was often amused, sometimes challenged (Huxley is an erudite author who almost demands footnotes), and increasingly aware that I was reading something that was as close to source material on the period as I was likely to find. For Huxley does not confine himself to the social and amorous goings-on typical of an early Waugh book such as A HANDFUL OF DUST. He also addresses politics (both fascism and communism are represented), religion and its substitutes, philosophy, the arts, and science. Even sex gets analyzed with an almost scientific detachment: there is a long disquisition by one of the more despicable characters on the techniques of seduction, perversion, and spiritual degradation; another embarks on what must be the first examination in literature of the phrase "sleeping around". As a reference work, this is fascinating; I just wish it were a better novel. Interesting though the numerous points are, I could have done with some genuine counterpoint.
