Gr 8 Up—Like most transgender children, Katie, who was born and raised as a boy named Luke, was aware of her difference early on, though it was years before she found the word to describe herself. Other family problems made it easy for her to withdraw into a serious depression without being noticed. When Katie finally came across the word "transgender" and read descriptions of what it meant, she risked everything and reached out to her mother, who was supportive and relieved to understand her child better. She promised to help Katie make the transition to her internally identified gender of female, if Katie promised not to kill herself. The book opens with Katie starting college. Having chosen to be an out and open transgender activist while still in high school, she decided to "go stealth" at college, a term used to describe transgender people who prefer not to be identified as such. The writing style is open and straightforward, although much of the dialogue is awkward and extraneous. The book starts out a bit slowly and picks up significantly in the later half. About the Author
Katie Rain Hill is a student at the University of Tulsa majoring in anthropology and sociology. She wrote this memoir while studying for exams, writing term papers, working part-time as a pharmaceutical technician, and advocating for LGBTQA rights. Rethinking Normal is her first book.

Rethinking Normal offers an honest, thought provoking tale of a small boy struggling to find his true identity as a woman.

I wasn't sure what to expect when I sat down and opened up Rethinking Normal for the first time, but I quickly found myself in the shoes of an amazing person telling her life story in honest detail. This is the story of Ms. Hill's journey to self discovery in spite of pain and suffering by her peers, that is often heart wrenching and uplifting. At times, as the reader, I felt like I needed to give the author a big hug and tell her it will be okay. Ms. Hill's story is touching, and brings awareness to a less than aware audience. It is a journey that the reader will take with the author as she recounts her tales of sadness, despair, love, and discovery that ultimately leads to her being the strong intelligent woman that she is today. This is a book that should be read by anyone and will help shed light on what it is like to grow up transgender in modern society, and will truly make you rethink what is normal.

Modern day Cinderella

On the strong side, this book gives a good insight into lives of transgendered people. There's a lot of emotion embedded into these pages: both high and lows as we get familiar with Katie's story. As it turns out, these experiences are not that different from common people (aka cisgendered). In a lot of instances Katie acts and feels and even falls in love like any girl her age would do. It clearly shows how unbased are society's fears and prejudices against transgender. And it calls for change to happen.

However, there is a reason why people should not write memoirs about themselves, especially at young age. Overall it lacks maturity and reeks a lot of judgments that author herself has. Like calling someone "probably gay" who can be easily identified from the events in the book. Or giving only onesided opinion about people that she did not like for some reason. But worst of all was her recounting on relationship with Arin.

Poor Arin... From Katie's perspective it seems that she never saw him as a man in her life. In other words he was friend-zoned, a feeling that is quite familiar to a lot of unhappy guys. Making it all public is a very rude thing to do - especially for someone who works very hard to build a masculine identity.

Outstanding read. There were some very emotionally poignant moments, and the story overall gave me a personal and touching glimpse into a lifestyle I knew nothing about, and was too afraid to ask about. Trust me, ALL your questions will be answered. I highly recommend this book - it will open your eyes and your mind.

Simply brilliant!

“Habit woke her at this hour. It was an old habit she had developed when young and it had stayed with her as she matured. She had learned it along with the other rules of married life. She woke up at midnight to await her husband’s return from his evening’s entertainment. Then she would serve him until he went to sleep.”

Originally published in 1956 in Arabic, Palace Walk is the first part of trilogy written by Nobel Prize winner Naguib Mahfouz. From the opening pages, the reader is given a glimpse into the life of a Cairo family near the end of the first world war. The father, a conservative Muslim, keeps his women confined to their home, and yet himself carouses at night, drinking and having affairs with various women. He rules his sons with an iron fist, and yet they each, in their own way, rebel against him. When WW I ends, Egypt is embroiled in a push for independence from Britain, and the family is caught up in the struggle.

This book is masterful on many levels. First, the story is excellent. It had me hooked immediately. Second, there is a great opportunity to learn about Egypt on the eve of independence, and the life of a Muslim family faced with political and cultural change. Third, I loved the subtle comparison of the oppression enforced by the family patriarch when placed next to their outrage against British oppression. Simply brilliant.

In spite of the fact that Sayed Abd El Jawab is a hypocrite and extremely cruel at times, his character and the way that he interacts with the other characters is not forced at all. Although I would despise him as a real human being, I admire him as a book character and by that I mean the craftsmanship in the way that he was put together.

We're not that different

Palace Walk, Bayn al-Qasrayn, is a street in Cairo, Egypt, where Ahmad Abd al-Jawad lives with his second wife, three sons, and two daughters. At the beginning of the book, World War I is winding down and Egypt is still an English protectorate.

PALACE WALK is written in omniscient point of view with shifting viewpoints. Ahmad Abd al Jawad, however, is the main character. He rules his household with an iron fist. His wife is forbidden to leave the house; his daughters must never be seen by a man until after their marriages are arranged. However, Jawad has a hidden side to his personality. After working all day at a kind of grocery store he owns, he spends his nights partying with his friends and cheating on his wife. He is the "life of the party," the direct opposite of the way he behaves around his family. His sons have never even seen him smile.

Yasin, Jawad's adult son from his first marriage, is the spitting image of the old man. He spends his nights drinking and carousing, but he suffers from an almost total lack of self control. Fahmy, the second son, is a law student. His story line focuses on Egypt's fight for independence once the war is over. Khadija is the older daughter, who, unfortunately, has her father's nose and little prospects for a husband; she also has a biting sense of humor; Aisha is the beautiful second daughter who shames Khadija by marrying first. Kamal, is a mischievous ten-year-old.

Much of Jamal's dialogue consists of quotes from the Koran; Jawad also attends mosque with his sons and has a prayer rug in his bedroom. Still, religion seems to be rather low on Jawad's list of priorities. Much of the narrative includes internal monologues where Jawad congratulates himself on what a good father, businessman, and patriot he is. He sees absolutely no problem with his carousing as long as he meets his religious expectations.

The real worth of PALACE WALK in my mind is Mahfouz's employing the Arab family to show that there isn't a whole lot of difference in families the world over. Yasin, Fahmy and the girls meet during coffee hour, during which time they tease each other unrelentingly, just like brothers and sisters in America. They gossip and spy on their neighbors; they argue about how to deal with their father.

For me, the real star of the novel is Kamal. He doesn't have a problem with making friends with the British soldiers, despite the fact that his brother Yasin is called a traitor for doing the same thing. He's the only one in the family who has the courage to stand up to his father's bullying, although he gets his "ears smoked" in the process.

The ending is definitely ironic. It has to do with Jawad's ambivalence toward his son Fahmy's "freedon fighting." Jawad hates the idea of his son's defiance (Fahmy wouldn't swear on the Koran to stay away from the demonstrations against the protectorate), but he wouldn't mind having a patriot son to brag about to his carousing friends.

There are two stereotypes of opera, first, the Viking heifer holding the spear, and second, some form of high brow music. Instead, how about, its just music, in a different style. Opera is defined by its music, and this is one of the defining songs of great opera. The story is about an American sailor, a Japanese woman, written by an Italian. You don get much more global than that. "One Fine Day" is so beautiful it is almost painful, and it is its own signature piece. I don't thing that there is a bad cover, but my favorite is by the Diva Maria Callas.

From the Author
Why did I write this book?  People frequently ask me why I decided to write a paperback book on Organizational Behavior.  The answer is three fold. First, I wanted to write a book on this topic because of my desire to influence how students think about the best way to influence and manage others, particularly in today's team-based organizations.   In a small way, I hope that our book positively impacts the way managers manage, thereby having a positive effect on the lives of others.  My goal is to influence the lives of others! The second reason revolves around the quality of textbooks that existed when Bob Kreitner--my coauthor--and I began writing the 1st edition of this book in 2001.  At that time, there were two types of organizational textbooks.  The first consisted of the hardback books that presented a comprehensive treatment of the subject--and we already published one of these--and the second were short and boring paperbacks.  We thought that the market place could use a shorter treatment of the subject that also was interesting, practical, and research-based.  The final reason revolves around Bob.  Bob and I had already written a successful hardback book on the topic of organizational behavior and it was a natural extension to write this book.  My collaboration with Bob has been one of the best working relationship and personal friendships in my life!
Users of this book can expect to read an up-to-date, practical, interesting, and easy to read treatment about the field of organizational behavior.  This book is not as comprehensive as Kreitner and Kinicki's Organizational Behavior 9e.

About the Author
Angelo Kinicki is a professor of management at Arizona State University. He received the Instructor of the Year Award for executive Education from the center for executive development in the college of business administration at ASU.

Robert Kreitner is a Senior Lecturer in Management at Arizona State university. He is a popular speaker who has addressed a diverse array of audiences worldwide on topics including the 21st century workplace.

Interesting modern case studies

In an MBA program right now and among all the books, this one left a good impression on me. I appreciated the frequent, high quality, illustrations and concise definitions of organizational behavior and structure.

This is a great look at the psychology of business. So far, this and Complex Organizations: A Critical Essay by Charles Perrow are the books I look forward to keeping in my future office.
