Excellent NURSING book for dialysis/ renal nurses

There seem to be few books on the care of renal patients written from a nursing perspective. This is one such book and an excellent one at that. The coverage is at a level appropriate for practicing nurses in the field. It's well written, balanced and fairly specific about practice issues. It is British but this is not detrimental to its value for US RNs. Buy it if you can find it at a reasonable price.

excellent book to help you heal

Beverly Engel is quickly becoming one of my favorite self-help book writers. This is her newest book, and a must read for anyone who was abused or who had a difficult childhood. Beverly Engel describes the various negative parental mirrors and how they effect children, and how these negative thoughts and beliefs about the self are carried into adulthood. She also provides are powerful step by step program (including journal writing) to help you move through your feelings, coming out the other side with a renewed sense of hope and with new tools to use for the furture. This may also be good for anyone who is harsh and critical of his/herself and would like some tools to be kinder to him/herself. Very validating and empowering book.

A simply amazing book. I have learned so much about myself and I am only half way thorugh. The book has already helped me to pinpoint the negative images I have and where they came from. This is my second Beverly Engel book and this one hit the nail on the head for me, whereas the other book was good, but not as appropriate for my needs.

I am not only learning to heal myself, but learning how to interact positively with my own children so they will not have the same problems I have. This book definately helps break the cycle.

This is geared toward abuse survivors of varying kinds. But I think it is a must read for all women...for women who have lost themselves in motherhood, in their job, in their spouses. Her writing style is easy to follow and not condescending. The exercises in the book are thought -provoking and insightful.

A fantastic party game with loads of room for improvisation

My husband and I held this game back in 1991, and I can still remember this great time we enjoyed. Our friends were so enthusiastic that following the game when we all went out for dessert, we were still dressed and acting like our characters! (Needless to say the waitress staff at the restaurant was rather stunned to see a party of twelve people in full tuxedos and ball gowns walk in at almost 3 in the morning.) The game is engaging and truly a blast to play, and when you finally figure out whodunnit, you may or may not be surprised, but you sure do have fun! It is an absolutely incredible experience to step out of the humdrum life you live and suddenly become someone so exceptionally vile or unbelievably naive. The characters are very well written and are well worth the time invested for the game. If you're going to get this game and use it, make certain to have access to a good costume shop, costumes make the characters easier to remember when breaking for dinner.

I have done three of these with my friends, and this was by far my favorite. All the characters are very interesting, and this murder was certainly the most complex one we have had to solve. The plot is also a little more thought out than the other two, and the costumes for this were the best, provided you want something fancy and elegant and flashy. If you want to relive the excitement of Hollywood in the 1930's, then definitely get this game.

Who is in control?

Wendell Wallach is the go-to person for informed and level-headed insights and ideas about the contemporary technological condition of humanity. For the last decade I have had the privilege of sitting in on his working group at Yale’s Interdisciplinary Bioethics Center and observing his tireless efforts to address every facet of our sociotechnical situation. Scores of experts, recruited by Wallach on his continual travels to conferences in the U.S. and abroad, have introduced us to the marvels and dangers, the dreams and realities, the problems and possible solutions engendered by the ever more rapidly proliferating products of science and engineering. This book represents the full flowering of Wallach’s project.

What is distinctive about “A Dangerous Master” is not only its comprehensive survey of such a vast terrain, but also its critical take on the risks and speculations that surround this topic. On the one hand Wallach does surely want to stress the omnipresent hazards that lurk in every corner of this brave new world. On the other hand he wants to bring our thinking about them down to earth by separating science-fiction-and-film-fueled myth from laboratory fact.

By this means Wallach wants to impress upon us that we humans still can be, and should be, in control. We need not, and should not, surrender to a supposed inevitability of machine dominance, not to mention, transformation of our very nature into something machine-like. No matter how magical the prospect seems to some (I will never forget the moment in one of our meetings when the speaker’s mention of technological magic moved several of us to reach into pocket or purse and hold up our new smartphone for the group’s awed admiration), or dystopian to others, neither the state of the art (and science) nor the inherent complexity of the issues need reduce us to ineffectual indulgence in fantasy or else utter hopelessness.

To this end Wallach highlights the notion of an inflection point, which is a brief interval at the cusp of a new development, in this case technological, where a real opportunity exists for society to assess and affect that development, sometimes even unto halting it in its tracks if it is deemed too dangerous. The book gives a case study of Wallach’s attempt to seize such a moment that now exists for the creation and global dispersal of autonomous weapons. At the same time Wallach does not want society to squelch promising and even essential new technologies due to unwarranted fears.

The book concludes with various practical suggestions for how humanity might try to achieve wise governance of our mechanical creations so that they will remain our “good servants” rather than become our “dangerous masters.”

An Illuminating Read

Despite the many benefits realized from emerging technologies, one becomes increasingly fearful of its more sinister aspects. From the media's relentless (complicit?) coverage of ISIS - a movement that essentially owes its global awareness ascension to social media - to the international race to see who can best whom in the world of hacking one another's most private information, it is easy for those of us less technology-inclined to feel pawns in an increasingly dangerous technology-driven world. In his most recent book, A Dangerous Master, author and ethicist Wendell Wallach educates readers on the accelerating momentum of technology accompanied in far too many cases by the disturbing lack of discourse beforehand concerning possible negative repercussions associated with its adaptation. Modern society, it seems, places a higher value on the continuous and rapid introduction of new technologies at the expense of having to deal after the fact with any negative consequences. According to Wallach; "Unfortunately, being seen as active during an actual crisis carries more weight with the chattering classes than having staved off a crisis that never develops." Wallach discusses a broad range of leading-edge technologies and their inevitable impact on all of us with sensitivity and clarity. This techno-neophyte found A Dangerous Master illuminating, if not comforting.

Serious Questions About Our Future in a World of Rapid and Complex Technological Change - We Ignore Them At Our Peril

Google, Facebook, Microsoft, and Baidu, among others, are hiring artificial intelligence researchers at an unprecedented rate - putting hundreds of millions into a race for better algorithms and smarter computers. Some scientific and technology luminaries (eg. Bill Gates, Stephen Hawking, Elon Musk, Steve Wozniak, have expressed considerable concern over where rapid advances in AI will take us. Fear of mass-produced Terminators, genetically-modified human embryos, self-driving cars, killer robots, uncontrollable emerging viruses, allowing humans to live to 150, etc. are becoming public more frequently.

Author Wallach's first example is that of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Prior to its startup, several knowledgeable scientists warned of the possibility it would create a tiny black hole into which Earth would disappear. Previously physicists working on the Manhattan Project worried that atomic bombs could set off a chain reaction in the earth's atmosphere - ending human life. Wallach's point is not that these predictions did not occur (actually, some scientists warn the LHC disaster may yet occur, but that these risks are appearing in more and more areas of endeavor and that it is also becoming increasingly difficult to objectively evaluate them because of their often probabilistic nature, occurring on the frontiers of science where clear answers are not available, and the invariable self-interests of involved individuals and entities. Potential economic and social order disasters may await in a world in which robots do almost all the work. Recent natural disasters (the Spanish Flu epidemic of 1918 and, a new strain of swine flu in 2009, along with man-made disasters (eg. thalidomide, Vioxx, Chernobyl, Union Carbide's Bhopal leak, the 2010 NYSE 'flash crash,' aerosol spray CFCs, and the growing threat to infrastructure posed by hackers. Geoengineering will become increasingly attractive as Global Warming progresses - and the risk of disastrous unexpected results.

Regulations offer a theoretical defense - but examination quickly exposes that defense as a chimera. Not only for reasons of complexity, unknown interactions, reaching tipping points, and vested interests, but also because of the increasing ease for DIY malefactors to operate and a political environment turning more and more against regulation.

Bottom-Line: 'A Dangerous Master' raises important points and offers credible prior examples. However, the book should have been condensed into an article.

Ophelia Speaks by Sara Shandler is a clever response to Mary Pipher's bestselling Reviving Ophelia. Shandler reveals telling portraits of teenage girls in this book, a compilation of essays, poems, and true-grit commentary from a cross section of teenage girls (or Ophelias), throughout the country. The book succeeds because it gives voice to their deepest concerns and their too-often frenzied lives. Because she's a college student, Shandler considers herself a peer of these adolescent girls, able to tap into their collective consciousness.

Shandler is as determined as she is a sharp reporter in chronicling the lives of these young women. To research the book, she sent out a mass mailing of 7,000 letters to high school and junior high school principals, counselors, and teachers explaining her book project and urging them to encourage teenage girls to contribute.

The topics covered run the gamut, but they include parental expectations, racial relations, and faith, among others. Sadly, eating disorders are an all-too-popular topic. The good news is that Shandler's contributors offer up some real insight for their peers. In one essay titled "Food Is Not My Enemy," Elizabeth Fales "calls us to a new feminism. In the old feminism, our mothers fought for the right to choose abortion. In our generation, we must fight for the right to eat."

The book also gives practical insight for parents who may find it hard to relate to their teenage daughters. In a nutshell, it appears that adolescent girls want unconditional love from parents who can be confidants without being overly critical. --Peg Melnick

Inspired by Mary Pipher's 1994 bestseller Reviving Ophelia, which shed new light on the problems of contemporary female adolescence, Shandler, currently an undergraduate at Wesleyan University, set out to give voice to the real Ophelias, America's teenaged girlsAherself included. Just 16 years old when she started this project, Shandler enlisted the help of hundreds of educators, counselors, pastors and administrators to find other girls who wanted to write about the issues most important to them. Ranging from problems with body image and self-mutilation to difficult relationships with parents and other family members, to intense academic pressures, the book is organized by subject and includes entries from dozens of girls across the country. We see girls in distant communities facing similar struggles as they attempt to navigate the pressured and competitive world of adolescence. Judging from the hundreds of contributions Shandler received, the issues these girls raise are weighty ones that our whole society needs be concerned about. Many of the girls write in an intensely personal style, but their concerns should not be written off as diary angst. Shandler has done an admirable job of shaping the disparate pieces into a disturbing mosaic that reveals the seriousness of teenage problems.

Shandler collected writings from adolescent girls all over the country on topics that include sexuality, eating disorders, feminism, family dynamics, and friendship; their words, framed by Shandler's own reflections, are riveting and revealing. The viewpoint presented here is very different from what the media have led us to believe are adolescent girls' concernsAit is their own voices we hear instead of advertising agencies' copy. Every thought I had as a Teenage girl

Wow! I read this book as a follow up to Mary Pipher's Reviving Ophelia. Reviving Ophelia deals with issues from a professional side. It too was a great read, but Ophelia Speaks was incredible. Every thought I had as a teenage girl and even now as a 25 year old was covered. It dealt with everything from relationships to eating disorders to death.
Now I find the book even more helpful as a first year teacher. I teach mostly freshman. It reminds me that there are a million different things these kids are dealing with on a daily basis.
I recommend this book to anyone. It's great for girls to see that they aren't alone. It's great for Mom's cause they've been there too. And it is even great for men, to see exactly what is going on in our minds!
Get it. Read it. And share it with a girl you love!

We Loved it!

Today's society has made us feel that our children must exceed in everything they do from grades to appearance(The need to be accepted into college is an added pressure). The young women who speak to us in this book feel that pressure and are just plain scared. This book which my daughter and I read together made me understand her feelings so much better(It was a terrific way to broach subjects that we parents may feel strange talking to our children about.

He is a former Chairman of the Board of Regents for the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners and the current President of the Better Government Association, a citizen watchdog group in Chicago, IL. Mr. Golden is an adjunct professor at DePaul University.

Steven L. Skalak, CPA, (Chicago, IL) is the National Practice Leader for PwC Investigations & Forensic Services of PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP.
