There isn't much reviewing done here for this particular edition of this particular book....all of the reviewing of the substance of "Stranger Than Science" (my own included) is to be found in Amazon's first listing of the book. While that is perfectly understandable (easiest to go to the first listing in the column to write your review), I felt compelled to scroll down a bit to the listing for this edition and make a few extra comments. Why? Because while "Stranger Than Science" is still "Stranger Than Science" in whatever edition you read it ,THIS is the one that is truly special. THIS is Ace Star edition number K-117 , published in 1960, and THIS edition is THE one that kicked off the whole "unexplained mysteries" fandom of the sixties onward. In large part, everyone from Brad Steiger and John Keel to Loren Coleman OWES

Frank Edwards and this book for opening the doors to careers and publishing successes to them. This book has, therefore, in "crypto" and "para" circles, ENORMOUS historical significance...even with all its flaws and inaccuracies. And we are talking specifically THIS version of it, the ORIGINAL Ace Star number K-117 . This is like a first edition of Action Comics or Detective Comics to a comics collector, rather than a "commemorative reprint". So, to get to the point, if you just want to read the narrative substance of "Stranger Than Science", feel free to pick up ANY of the above reprint editions...and ENJOY...but if you want to get a rush off owning "The Real Deal", then K-117 is the one you want (remember, the 1959 Hardcover was not the print run that started the "unexplained enigmas" ball rolling...it was the 1960 PAPERBACK edition...THIS edition).

More than lustful women, and the men who were glad for it.

This is an overall rating for the bundle. The first book was the best and longest of the group. While fairly entertaining, I found many of the actions of the heroines of the series to be implausible, for the period. While I personally don't mind detailed sex scenes, I never find anything romantic about sodomy. Also, every H and h were beautiful people. Does the author think her readers so shallow that they will not be engaged with characters who are not so physically perfect? There also is sloppy editing throughout. Sometimes it's a typo but also missing words or wrong words. The last two offerings are more novellas than novels.

Because of her unique historical romance characters with well-rounded, interesting personalities and steamy libidos, Jess Michaels is on my must-read list. The fabulous Flynn family and their trials and tribulations make for a great read. Did I mention that these are what I would consider Hard-R Rated? Heat level is four of five jalapenos. I purchased the books in this collection individually as they were published, and highly recommend each and every one.

Dr. Smith began his career as a research scientist in quantum mechanics before his interest in strategy prompted him to pursue an MBA. His focus on pricing is a natural culmination of his deep love of math and his market orientation. Although a textbook an easy and very informative read!

I first purchased this book about a year ago as I was beginning to re-engage in a B2B industry I had previously spent 20+ years in. Strategy is always an interesting topic, and inquisitive by nature I have always been intrigued by why firms, mine and others took the pricing actions that they did, so I bought the "textbook". Although as a textbook it is complete with exercises at the end of each chapter (and answer sets which are not available -ug), it is written at a level and with a style which makes it easily readable.

The understanding of pricing strategies gained from reading this book, along with following the author Tim Smith through his work at his consulting company Wiglaf Pricing and their [...] has allowed me to reexamine my industry with renewed insight, and identify a path forward which is more explainable, well reasoned and sucessfully sustainable.

I consider Pricing Strategy to be a must read for anyone serious about understanding the pricing side of a business. I highly recommend Pricing Strategy without reservation.

Best Book on Pricing I've Ever Seen

While I am somewhat biased as an associate of Tim Smith but this presentation is the best I have ever seen on the subject of strategic pricing. I have been teaching marketing as an adjunct professor in Chicago for 28 years and pricing is an integral part of my teaching curricula. This book takes the art and science of pricing and setting prices to an entire new level. It offers excellent perspective in pricing and theory and practice and offers the most complete presentation of pricing that I have ever seen.

The Pricing Bible

Pros: The book covers just about every pricing topic that a reader could want...any many that a reader will never need. It also goes into the math behind the various strategies, but in a way that does not make it required reading to incorporate the strategies. In short, it is a great primer on pricing strategy and will allow the reader to go as deep as they want.

Cons: I thought the book should go into a bit more detail on how to price in a competitive market. It's not that it did not cover this topic, it is more of the fact that this topic is probably more impactful than any of the other topics in the book in practice.

Why isn't this book more popular?

The purpose of this book is to argue for two claims:

1) There is no moral significance to the doing/allowing distinction.

2) The "Doctrine of Double Effect" is false.

The doing/allowing distinction and the DDE lie at the core of "common sense morality", and so Bennett's frying some pretty big fish by taking them on. His arguments are simultaneously creative and rigorous, drawing heavily on metaphysics and the philosophy of action to reach some rather startling moral conclusions. As an application of metaphysics to ethics, this book is exemplary, second in the contemporary literature only to Parfit's Reasons and Persons.

That's why it's surprising that it's only the 2,000,000-th most popular book on Amazon (as of the time of this review). If you're interested in the CENTRAL problems of normative ethics, and enjoy work that challenges our most deeply held views, put this in your shopping cart tout de suite!

CIPA is “The Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys” and this is the book that has been described in Floyd LJ’s foreword as the ‘stalwart of the profession.’ It has been so since the first edition appeared in 1980 and it continues to be so with this new eighth edition recently published by Sweet & Maxwell/Thomson Reuters.

Actually the provenance of this long established work of reference goes back even further. According to its co-editor Paul Cole, its precursors can be traced back to 1950 with the publication of the Patents Act 1949 by the then Chartered Institute of Patent Agents. The second edition of 1968 was published with the stated aim of providing “a manual for reference, if not daily, at least whenever any doubt arises on the provisions of the Act or Rules and above all, on the practice under them.” ‘The aim and format’ of what has become known as ‘The Back Book’, adds Paul Cole, ‘have continued unchanged to the present day.’

As ever, the aim of this publication has been to record and comment upon the multiplicity of changes that have taken place pertaining to patent legislation over relatively recent decades, including European and international developments. But wait, you might argue, patents and the legislation pertaining to patents go back a lot longer than, say, the twentieth century. And so they do, with section 6 of the Statute of Monopolies 1623 which linked patent eligibility ‘to the working or making of any manner of new manufacture within the realm.’ So, it has some history!

Returning to the present, it seems appropriate to quote the editor that ‘the law of patents in the UK is… no longer contained in any single act and keeping up to date with all the various changes remains a challenge.’

Fortunately we live in the age of the internet and more than several useful sites are mentioned in this volume. Also handy for readers who wish to remain up to date, is that anyone who purchases this book direct from Sweet & Maxwell will have the option if they so choose, of having their names recorded so that they can receive information about updating supplements issued approximately annually.

Another notable feature of the book include the many references to decisions not -- or not yet -- published in the law reports, (on patent and IP cases) but available elsewhere, such as in the British Library, The Times, and so forth.

While noting that this highly regarded and authoritative work of reference is an indispensable purchase for patent attorneys, lawyers in other specialisms will also appreciate its value, particularly in what Floyd refers to as ‘the new legal landscape’ in which profound changes in European patent law are taking place. It is worth pointing out here that the book presents the insights and commentary of almost two-dozen expert contributors, including barristers and solicitors as well as patent attorneys.

That said the book has over 1,600 pages of detail and is designed for ease of use with numbered paragraphs throughout, six appendices and a massive index at the back. Also note the research sources which include tables of cases, statutes, statutory instruments and court rules as well as tables of European Patent Office decisions. There is also a table of International Conventions, Treaties and Related Rules and Regulations… and a table of European Patent Office Guidelines.

Protected for the most part by patent law in all its intricacies, inventions and inventiveness have collectively become a prime driving force of economic progress over the centuries.

It is therefore not unfair or unreasonable today to say that this definitive work should be considered an essential purchase for all practitioner libraries.

The editors have stated the law as at January 2016.

About the Author

Sir Hew Strachan was born in Edinburgh in 1949, and was educated at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, where he was a Fellow between 1975 and 1992. He was Professor of Modern History at the University of Glasgow between 1992 and 2001, and founded its Scottish Center for War Studies. From 2002 to 2015 he was Chichele Professor of the History of War at the University of Oxford, and a Fellow of All Souls College, and between 2003 and 2012 he directed the Oxford Program on the Changing Character of War. Since 2015 he has been Professor of International Relations at St. Andrews University. The first volume of his planned trilogy on the First World War, To Arms, was published in 2001, and in 2003 he was the historian behind the 10-part series, The First World War, broadcast on Channel 4. He is a Commonwealth War Graves Commissioner and a Trustee of the Imperial War Museum, and serves on the British, Scottish, and French national committees advising on the centenary of the First World War.
