The Brussels-based architectural studio Dogma was founded in 2002. Led by Martino Tattara and Pier Vittorio Aureli it has focused almost exclusively on large-scale projects and citywide interventions. These projects venture beyond mere physical size to expand conceptual frameworks and radically rethink what it is to produce an architectural project, in the process challenging the very discipline itself. This book, and its accompanying exhibition at the AA School of Architecture, explores 11 works developed since 2002 that collectively present the Dogma ethos: to see the urban project as a comprehensive domain in which architectural form, the political and the city are reclaimed as one 'field'. Mobilising and reinvigorating both drawing and text - the quintessential tools of architecture - these 11 projects range from speculative and theoretical proposals to investigations that question today's modes of housing. Complementing the projects themselves are essays by Brett Steele and Gabriele Mastrigli.

About the Author
Pier Vittorio Aureli is an architect and educator. He graduated at the Universita IUAV di Venezia and earned his PhD at TU/Delft-Berlage Institute. His work focuses on the relationship between architectural form, political theory and urban history. He is the author of 'The Possibility of an Absolute Architecture' (The MIT Press, 2011), and 'The Project of Autonomy: Politics and Architecture Within and Against Architecture' (Princeton Architectural Press) and other books and writings. Currently he is Diploma Unit Master at the Architectural Association in London where he also teaches courses within the History and Theory Program. He directs the PhD program 'The City as Project' at the Berlage Institute in Rotterdam.

new directions in urban thinking

aureli's radical propositions are supported by a rethinking of how we look at urbanism and how architecture might be reasserted in therms of its significance value and meaning. aureli - unfashionably - proposes that the idea of urbanisation has superseded the more enduring and valuable notions and concepts informing the idea of the city and seeks to reestablish the primacy of architecture and the city. this publication accompanied the exhibition at london's aa school of architecture where aureli teaches and presents a number of projects prepared by aureli and his partner under the name 'dogma'. the montages of the competition entry for albania are amongst the powerful architectural/urban representations in recent time and the numerous drawings reminiscent of the work of franco purini and early tschumi drawings. aureli is becoming an increasingly important presence in the architectural landscape and dogma : 11 projects demonstrates why
